Dr. Naga Vemprala, Professor of Operations & Technology Management (OTM)

Research Highlights

Dr. Vemprala is currently researching the trustworthiness of the social media platform utilizing Blockchain technology. Users have the ability to share their content and influence others. However, there are also individuals with malicious intent who seek to manipulate stories and disseminate misinformation to a wider audience, often for political purposes.

If social media platforms fail to acknowledge the adverse consequences they generate and unjustly label genuine content as misinformation silencing well-intentioned users, the credibility and value of the platform will be called into question.

Dr. Vemprala is developing a platform based on Blockchain technology. To test the effectiveness of this platform, Dr. Vemprala, along with Dr. Gudigantala and a University of Alabama faculty member, are conducting an experiment.

They are using a sample set of real online claims and gathering user-generated content within a controlled environment. This platform aims to capture user-generated content while ensuring the integrity of collective emotions and opinions, making it resistant to tampering.

Societal Impact

  • Dr. Vemprala’s research introduces a Blockchain solution that effectively records gun violence transactions and facilitates the tracking of crimes.

Student Impact

  • 95% of all organizations use Cloud, and by preparing our students to use platforms (AI, machine learning – will help shape their future

Current Projects

Research 1  (+ Dr. Gudigantala + Dr. Eom) – Collected approximately 350M tweets pertaining to COVID-19. A substantial number are engaging in discussions RE: positive and negative effects of COVID-19 vaccines, resulting in the formation of two distinct groups of individuals: Vaxxers and Anti-Vaxxers

Research 2 (+ Dr. Gudigantala + Dr. Eom +Toyota Researcher) – This study employs Blockchain technology to foster discussions among users on significant societal issues, such as US elections

Research 3 (+ Dr. Gudigantala + Senior consultant & Machine Learning Operations Author) – Constructing a conceptual structure to apply machine learning models

Numerous global organizations have adopted machine learning models to address business problems using their organizational data. COVID-19 vaccination, and terrorist attacks like the Hamas attack on Israel

Spotlights

  • Chapter Director, North South Foundation (NSF) – a Trust established in India. Headquartered in Hyderabad, the primary goal is to award scholarships to students typically held back for lack of financial resources.
  • Dr. Vemprala coordinated the NSF spring conference to be held at University of Portland and hosted 100+ families on campus
  • Research on Blockchain has recently been published in the prestigious journal ACM Transactions in Management Information Systems (ACM TMIS)
