Developing Leadership Skills

Is your student interested in making a positive impact in their local, national, and global communities? Do they want to set themselves apart when applying for service opportunities, internships, and jobs? Would they like to develop leader habits, such as being more courageous and motivational? Encourage your student to explore the various leadership opportunities offered through the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship & Innovation!

Here are some steps that you can take as a parent to encourage your student in developing leadership skills:

1. Discuss with your student what it means to be a Pilot leader and how they can practice the 7 leader habits through their everyday actions.

2. Encourage your student to consider registering for a leadership course in the Franz Center Leader Certificate Program.

The Leader Certificate Program is designed to provide leaders with the tools, knowledge, and ability to impact and inspire their followers using the key leader habits. Courses are 1 credit and meet once per week. All students can register for the first course in the program (LDR 225: Foundations of Leadership), and all majors are welcome! To hear about how students have grown as leaders in the Leader Certificate Program, consider watching this short video.

Students who enroll in the Leader Certificate Program receive priority in the RA selection process with Residence Life, and students who enroll in the Leader Certificate Program (by taking LDR 225) also receive priority in the selection process for the Global Perspectives on Leadership course (see below).

If your student is in need of financial assistance, they will be asked to complete a scholarship application. The scholarship form is available each semester. For further questions, please contact Dr. Dave Houglum, Franz Center Director for Leadership, at houglum@up.edu.

3. Learn more about the “Global Perspectives on Leadership: Morocco” course.

The Global Perspectives on Leadership course (LDR 391) offers students the chance to learn about leadership, migration, women’s empowerment, and environmental awareness through cultural immersion, service, and outdoor adventure! The class involves three phases of instruction: classroom instruction, field experience, and community/social justice outreach. This three-credit course will be offered beginning in Spring Semester 2020 for enrolled students participating in the subsequent phases of the course. Students in the course will travel to Morocco (and Spain) for approximately one month during May 2020. Click here for a brief picture slideshow of the Morocco program!

Students who successfully complete all requirements for this course will receive the distinction of “Emphasis in Global Leadership” on their Leader Certificate upon completion of the Leader Certificate Program. Priority will be given to students who are enrolled in the Leader Certificate Program who have taken or are currently taking LDR 225: Foundations of Leadership. Applications are due October 1, 2019 through the Studies Abroad application process
