Student Health Center and Counseling Center Summer Hours:

The Student Health Center (primary care) will be open on a limited schedule during the summer and closed during the month of July. The phone will be answered Monday through Friday during regular business hours; our medical office administrator will be available to assist in connecting students to off-campus care if needed. We will resume normal hours on August 12.

The Counseling Center will be available on a limited schedule through May and then closed from June 1 until August 15.  Online tele-mental health counseling is available for enrolled students through BetterMynd. The Counseling Center phone line will be available through the summer to answer questions and guide students to off-campus referrals and BetterMynd.

Conversation Starters for April

How are you preparing for final exams?

How are you taking care of yourself?

Are you checking your UP email regularly for any end-of-semester information or reminders?

What ‘adulting’ skills have you added to your list this year?

Overall, how do you feel this school year played out? Were your expectations met? What surprised you?

For our on-campus students:

What day and time is your move-out appointment?

What arrangements have you made for summer storage?

Residence Hall Move-Out and Other Important Details

Residence halls close at noon on Friday, May 3 for all non-graduating students. Graduating seniors may stay until noon on Monday, May 6, at no additional charge. However, fines will still apply if they do not follow check-out procedures or do not turn in their key to staff.

Students staying for summer school: Spring 2024 resident students may stay in their current room until the summer housing start date. They will be billed at the weekly summer housing rate for the “May Interim” weeks between final exams week and the Summer Housing start date. For more information about summer housing, visit this page.

Need to store items? Each residence hall has a ‘trunk room’ where, for $200, students can reserve summer storage space for one mini-fridge, one microwave, and up to three 27-gallon bins for their items. Students can reserve their space through their Hall Director. Space is limited, and priority is for students that are returning to the community next Fall. Please visit this page for more details. For students in need of storage who are not returning to a residence hall, a quick Google search of ‘storage near 97203’ can help you find the best options for their needs.

Please note: unused meal plan points do not carry over to the next academic year. These points will go away after the Thursday night meal on May 2. Students can purchase food with cash, debit or credit on Friday morning, May 3.

What do students need to do before they leave?

  • Make an appointment with their RA by April 28 for a time to check out of their room. There is a $75 ‘improper check out fine’ if students miss their scheduled RA appointment check out.
  • Turn in room keys to the staff member that checks your out of your room. Keys left in the room could result in a ‘lost key’ charge of $100.
  • Remove all personal belongings from the residence hall by noon on Friday, May 3, or by noon on the pre-approved late stay date. Remind your student that this includes all trash!
  • Clean the room: remove posters and art from walls and ceilings, wipe down and dust all surfaces (desks, wardrobes, etc), clean the sink and mirror, and vacuum/mop floors. A fine will be applied to ALL students who lived in the room if it is deemed not clean. Talk to your student about how they and their roommate will manage the final cleaning if one of them checks out earlier than the other.
  • Recycle as much as possible! Dumpsters will be available for non-recyclable items. Empty wastebaskets, and do not leave garbage in public areas.
  • Donate usable items – especially electronics! We will have donation drop off centers in the Anchor for North Quad, Mehling Ball Room for West Quad, and the lobbies of Kenna and Christie for East Quad. Items go to the local community and charities, and grately reduce landfill waste. Mini-fridges, microwaves, clothing, non-perishable food, books, and household goods in decent shape are all welcome.
  • Return any Bon Appetit items in the room (silverware, trays, cups) to the Commons or to a designated box in your hall lobby/lounge.

We trust that students will leave their residence hall home in great condition; if these steps are not followed, a fine could be posted to their student account as outlined in the housing contract. Please understand that fines are not meant to be punitive; they are imposed when well-informed students do not follow the move-out procedures that are designed for an efficient move-out process for hundreds of students in each residence hall on move-out day.

Students may direct questions to hall staff or to the Office of Residence Life in Tyson 123, at reslife@up.edu, or 503-943-7205.
