Congratulations on getting your first show, and if you’re a returning DJ, we’re happy to have you again! Here are a list of tips to help you put on your best show. We hope newbies will find it helpful, and seasoned DJs could learn something new.

Preparing your show…

Spend time on your playlist

You have a week between shows to decide which dozen songs you want to broadcast to campus. Start picking songs early! Pick a theme and design a playlist around it. Browse through the depths of your music library to find old songs you forgot about. Find new music by reading music blogs and publications.

Download your playlist before your show

If you choose to stream online, it’s a good idea to download the playlist while in wifi. This way you’ll be able to play your music even if campus wifi goes down.

Adjust playback settings

You know when you’re listening to the radio, and the songs seem to blend together? You can achieve this continuous sound by adjusting the settings of your device or platform. For example, on Spotify, head to “Advanced Settings,” and adjust the “Crossfade songs” option under “Playback.”

Make note of the length of your playlist

You have one (or two!) hours in the studio, and you’ll want to finish up by 57th minute of the hour. Plan your playlist to allow time for breaks between songs when you speak over the radio. Of course, the length of your playlist depends on how much you have to say. By finishing on time, you’re being courteous to the next DJ.

Don’t forget your ID card!

Just like for the residence halls, you need to swipe your card to get into the building.

In the studio…

Show up early

It’s a good rule to show up to the studio 10 minutes before the start of your show. This gives you time to set up your laptop and close any unnecessary tabs that might play noise during your broadcast (think Outlook or messaging apps.)

Make the most of your options

The studio has an aux cord for devices, but there is also a CD player and a record player. If you need help with these tools, reach out to someone on staff for guidance!

Leave the food and drinks outside

Let’s keep the place clean and protect our expensive equipment.

Lastly, have fun… and support your fellow DJs!
