(By: Molly Dinsmore) Juniper Honey Interview: Che Cafe, San Diego, California
March 7th, 2024

Josh, Jake, Donovan, and Cason make up a band called Juniper Honey, based out of Southern California. I was lucky enough to get some insight into some of their first experiences as a touring band. Here is a look into that conversation.

Interview Transcript

Molly Dinsmore: So starting off, what are your names and your ages?

Jake:

I’m Jake and I’m 20

Josh:

I’m Josh and I’m 19.

Cason:

I’m Cason and I’m 21

Donovan:

I’m Donovan and I’m 19

Jake:

freshly 20.

Molly Dinsmore: So how did you guys meet?

Jake:

Yeah. So me and Donovan, which is our drummer, he and I met through a mutual friend-slash-friend-slash, like bandmates sort of in high school. And we were in a band for all of high school together that was different. And in the meantime, that band played with Cason, our guitar player. And he and our band kind of like hit it off and played a few shows together. I ended up recording some songs for Cason just like in my garage. And then we kind of formed a friendship there. And then Josh, our bass player, was like a mutual friend to some friends from my high school. And so it was just like, because Josh is in the same area. So you kind of just like, nobody plays music and stuff. And he had reached out one time to our old band and knew like, we were gonna lose our bass player or whatever, and just jam on every kick. And then yeah, long story short, I mean, Don, and its old band fell apart. And we picked up Cason from just from whatever and Josh, same.

Molly Dinsmore:

And you just formed formed a band!

Jake:

Yeah, it was kind of a long shot, because me and Donovan were up in San Luis Obispo. Yeah, they were from SoCal. And we’re just like, once you see if they’re in.

Molly Dinsmore:

So you’re still in college right now?

Jake:

Yeah, we’re trying to kind of ease off a little bit to focus a little more on like, being able to be all together. Yeah. Definitely has like its cons.

Jake:

We don’t really know anything.

Molly Dinsmore:

It’s amazing that you’re able to like kind of tour.

Jake:

Yeah, like, it just takes a lot of online classes.

Molly Dinsmore:  So this next question, I don’t know, it can be kind of controversial. Spotify or Apple Music?

Jake:

Spotify,

Donovan:

 Spotify.

Cason:

Spotify

Donovan:

That’s crazy. They have Apple Music, and they said, Spotify I have.

Josh:

personally, I will say I enjoy Spotify more. But there’s pros and cons to both. Okay, Apple music treats the artists very well. That’s it recently, I just enjoy using Spotify more. I agree. I like getting to know more about who I’m listening to. And that’s true.  But so that to me outweighs the Apple Music.

Molly Dinsmore:

True. Gotcha.

Josh:

It’sa personal thing.

Molly Dinsmore:  That was a resounding that was that was good to hear as a Spotify. That’s awesome. So how has your tour been? So far? You know, you’ve been a few cities. How have those been any, like outstanding moments or places?

Jake:

We were, like, asked that question a couple of weeks ago. And then every single time anyone brings up what’s been your favorite spot? We all just kind of go San Francisco.

Josh:

We just had a good time.

Jake:

We like every place because we just love doing music. Anything else? Yeah. San Francisco stood out. We played in Seattle and Oregon. And Utah.

Donovan:

Arizona. Idaho.

Molly Dinsmore:  Glad to hear about San Francisco. That’s awesome. When did you guys like, what was the round the year that you started creating music together?

Jake:

2021, No, 2022

Josh:

That was 2021. Right?

Cason:

The beginning of 2023.

Josh:

Wasn’t last December, but the December before that.

Jake:

Yeah. 2022 was when we recorded our first

Josh:

Yeah, yeah. But then we didn’t release it until 2023. Because

Jake:

We’re very fresh. It feels like it hasn’t been new because we’ve been like so non stop doing stuff. And we all already got the taste of like being in a band before and like so we can just feel it, man. So in this one started, it was like, just a new band but still like us;

Josh:

And also like, I don’t know, like, for me at least there wasn’t very much pause time between my old band and this band. So yeah, that’s why I just kind of felt like yeah,

Molly Dinsmore:  Have you done interviews like this?

Josh:

Maybe one or two or two

Molly Dinsmore:

Yeah. Yeah. With like, like colleges?

Jake:

one for UW. In Washington cool we did one for like there was another one but maybe not

Josh:

yeah actually like did one for a school in Costa Mesa.

Jake:

Oh, yeah, just random thing like Yeah, nothing going that’s

Molly Dinsmore:  So this one is kind of random kind of not really related music but what I love asking what surprises people about you?

Jake:

Oh my god, definitely our age.

Josh:

People think we are older

Jake:

and our height. At least me and Josh

Josh:

That goes without saying that’s that’s that has nothing to do with the band. That’s just life. All our lives.

Jake:

I think. I think the age, a lot of people will be like Jesus Christ

Molly Dinsmore:

I mean, you’re still very much like college age.

Josh:

We are all like the sophomore level.

Molly Dinsmore:  California has a really vibrant music scene and art scene. How does it kind of feel to be one of the many creators like a part of it? Overwhelming, awesome..?

Josh:

I’ve never really thought about it.

Cason:

Natural. I feel like, honestly, all of us have been doing this since we were like 13 or 14 years old. Yeah. So I love being in part of the California Scene. Like it’s crazy. There’s different feeling, the Utah scene right now is totally a different theme going on. And it’s, you go there and you feel the difference, but coming home is just like, Oh, sick, and we’re back in my hometown. Scene, I know exactly what part of the crowd is gonna do what when I know when people are gonna show up because it’s San Diego. Literally, you’re like, hh, I’m at home. Its fun.

Jake:

I think I think sometimes it can be a little bit stressful too andnd overwhelming, because it’s just, there’s so much good talent. And there’s like, places like LA and San Diego and San Francisco. Like, that’s like a big music scene in three cities. So it’s kind of like, I don’t know, sometimes I’ll like work myself up. Like, there’s a million of us. Like there’s a million better musicians than us that are just in front of us, whatever, like, and I stress myself out, but then at the end of the day, it’s like, it’s sick to be a part of that. And it’s like, it’s cool to have a bill with a bunch of bands that you’re stoked to watch open for you. And I’m just grateful that like we’re like headlining the show.

Molly Dinsmore:  That’s really cool. I have two more questions for you. My next one is super fun, I love asking this. If you were an album what would you be?

Josh:

Are we gonna see the same thing? We can’t say the same thing!

Cason:

 We’re like twins though.

Josh:

 I’ll say something different.

Jake:

My all-time favorite album, So that’s what I’m just gonna go off of is probably Sky Blue Sky by Wilco

Cason:

Let’s just run it now.

Josh:

All right, fine. Wait, wait, what are we gonna say? The album or the artist?

Josh and Carson

Built to Spill, Keep it Like a Secret

Donovan:

Best ban you never heard. Probably a good old love Led Zeppelin two.

Molly Dinsmore:  That’s like I love asking my question. I get some like, awesome question. Anyway, what are your expectations for tonight? And I guess your future, I guess you’re coming to the end of your tour. Is this like the last show? Like the final? For now? How are you feeling about that?

Donovan:

I’m excited. I’m gonna miss it. Definitely. Because it’s been such a fun just couple of weekends hanging with these guys. Doing what we love to do the most. And I’m excited for what the future holds.

Jake:

I’m excited for tonight. I think it’s gonna be like kind of a pressure relief of all of us. Like throughout the show. We’re kind of just gonna be like, getting every last drop out. So I can definitely say we’re gonna have some fun energy tonight. And I’m just excited for we just did an hour I’m so excited to play shows when the album comes out and that’s just looking into the future like I’m excited for the next round of this

Cason:

we didn’t sound check tonight..

Josh:

it’s a hometown show and of the thing, what happens happens yeah,

Jake:

the hometown crowd

Molly Dinsmore:  Do you have friends and family?

Josh:

parents are coming that’s awesome

Donovan:

parents, mom’s

Cason:

Im bummed the tours over because we don’t get to hang out really that much when we’re not on tour together and then we all have to go back and work and share all our money

Donovan:

yeah ever

Molly Dinsmore:like such an elevated like world!

Donovan:

Ya it was weird to go to like states with like I’ve never been to see like Washington or Oregon. Like just going on that weekend exploring doing things I’ve never done at work. Boom school, you have a speech next Monday

Jake & Donovan:

And work, we both work at a sandwich shop

Cason: & Josh:

and we both work at a pizza shop!.

Molly Dinsmore:

What a connection. Well, that’s all I have for you. Any other questions or anything else to say? Thanks so much for sitting down with me!
