First Things is a conservative Christian magazine based in New York who is offering a fellowship for recently graduated students interested in writing and editing content centered about religion, spirituality, and politics. First Things is looking for graduating seniors with some sense of calling to writing, editing, or public intellectualizing, even if they plan to go to grad school and then teach. Part of their stewardship of this particular enterprise is using it to help train people to do the same sort of work in the future. It’s a great position for a young person interested in either editorial work or learning to write and edit as an academic. Aside from getting to work with the magazine, you will receive a small stipend as well as housing in an apartment a few blocks north of Union Square in the lower part of Manhattan. The rules are: evening prayer on weekdays and a community dinner on Saturday nights, and do assigned chores.
The applications for next year’s junior fellowship opens on February 1st, and the fellowship lasts from August 1st to July 31st, with usual but not necessary extension for a second year when the fellow becomes an assistant editor. The junior fellows are fully enveloped into the editorial life of the magazine, and participate in everything from moderating comments to editing manuscripts and participating in seminars and conferences.
Please visit First Thing’s homepage on February 1st to apply.
