Sample Assignments
The following examples illustrate ways to incorporate multimedia projects across disciplines. Please contact José Velazco, Library Digital Initiatives Coordinator (velazco@up.edu / 503.943.7602) to schedule a consultation in order to develop multimedia assignments in support of the curriculum.
Video Project
Course: Computer Science 441
Topic of course: Software Engineering
Project description: Create a video explaining software design.
Students were asked to create a video describing a software component. Students learned how to capture video and audio using digital cameras. Participants also used Adobe Premiere Pro to import, edit and export final videos for online publishing.
Website Creation
The following assignment was created using instruction and technical support from Digital Lab staff. Students used class time to capture images using the Image Production Studio and inserted the final photographs into their poster design.

Topic of course: Multimedia Production
Project description: Create a Blog
Microblogging has revolutionized the way media is disseminated throughout culture. Sites like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and most recently Vine have created an abbreviated language that producers and subscribers of the these spaces use as a vernacular.
Students created a blogs using the Tumblr microblogging site and updated the space during
the course of the semester. These spaces reflected a singular focus regarding a social issue, area of research or hobby.
Design

Course: German 302
Topic of course: City life
Project description: Personenbeschreibung
The personal profiles are part of a project on Austrian youth of the post-2008 economic crisis. We read the article “Jugend ohne Bock” from the Austrian weekly Profil. The title refers to an aimless youth. The article included four personal profiles of Austrian youth. Such profiles are examples a genre and as such they follow typical conventions.
The students analyzed the common moves in the texts and the types of questions that were likely asked by the reporters who wrote the profiles. I assigned them to work in pairs to interview each other and to write about each other. Upon writing and revising the texts, they worked Digital Lab staff to capture images and to place text and photos into a Photoshop template.
Students learned about the genre of personal profiles, through the creation of the posters and revisions developed greater control of writing in German. They also took a first step in learning some basics of page layout and Photoshop.
Infographic Design Workshop
Course: Education 150
Topic of course: Introduction to Education
Project description: Design an infographic.
Students were asked to create infographics for a class project. A one hour tutorial was presented describing the online software Piktochart with suggestions on best practices regarding design and file management.
Travel Ad Poster Workshop
Course: Spanish 201
Topic of course: Intermediate Spanish
Project description: Create a travel ad using Photoshop.
Class members were tasked with creating a poster describing a travel destination in a Spanish speaking country. Students used Photoshop to import images and edit text. The class used the main lab to learn software basics and complete projects.
