The University of Portland Wind Symphony and Orchestra will present a diverse musical program featuring classical favorites and premiere performances on Sunday, March 3, at 5 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium on the University campus at 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. The concert is free and open to the public.
The Wind Symphony will open the concert with “Heart, Healing and Hope,” a special program dedicated to health care organizations and the service they provide. Representatives from the Oregon Trail Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Autism Society of Oregon will assist in the festivities. Musical selections will include a world premiere by internationally acclaimed composer Martin Ellerby, and an American premiere by Daisuke Shimizu. The University of Portland Orchestra will feature the music of Sergei Prokofiev. Student concerto competition winner Ryan Chien will play Prokofiev’s dramatic Piano Concerto no. 1, followed by Prokofiev’s most famous work, Peter and the Wolf, featuring UP’s newly-appointed provost, Tom Greene, as the narrator.
