Jesuit Volunteer Corps. Press Release:

Portland, Ore. — University of Portland alumna has recently embarked on a year of full-time service with Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC) Northwest:

·          Hannah Hoffarth, Family Support Network, Billings, Mont.

A total of 148 Jesuit Volunteer (JV) /AmeriCorps members* – 24 returning for a second year, and two returning for a third year – have joined JVC Northwest this year. They are serving in 21 locales throughout the five states of the Northwest, living in 24 JV communities. JVC Northwest is excited to announce that its AmeriCorps funding through the Corporation for National and Community Service has been renewed for an additional three years, allowing 135 of our current Jesuit Volunteers to also be AmeriCorps members, serving in communities with the greatest need.

“JV/AmeriCorps members come to the year with the hope of making a difference in the lives of those they serve, and in the ecosystems in which they live. They will offer over 280,000 hours of service this year and touch the lives of thousands. JVs often don’t realize how significantly they themselves will be transformed throughout the process,” says Jeanne Haster, Executive Director for JVC Northwest.

This year, JV/AmeriCorps members will serve in 107 partner agencies across the region in many areas, involved in critical social services advocating for domestic violence survivors, nursing in community clinics, teaching and tutoring in schools with Native American children, assisting in shelters, working for food justice issues, and many more important works.  Throughout their year of service, JV/AmeriCorps members focus on four core values–social and ecological justice, simple living, spirituality, and community.

There are two Jesuit Volunteer organizations in the United States, JVC Northwest and JVC.  JV/AmeriCorps members serve in a variety of urban and rural locations and are challenged to live simply and work for social and ecological justice in a spiritually supportive environment.
Established in 1956, JVC Northwest is an independent, non-profit organization that recruits, places, and supports volunteers living in communities across the Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington.

For more information, visit www.jvcnorthwest.org.

* “JV/AmeriCorps members” is a general term referring to all Jesuit Volunteers, both our JV AmeriCorps members and our JV non-AmeriCorps members who are providing advocacy and ministry services.

History Alumni prominently featured

February 7, 2013 By Mark

Anna Sokolov with photo of her parents.

History Alumni Anna Sokolov has been featured in two stories in the Albany Democrat-Herald.

Anna is currently working on her MAT with social studies and language arts licensure at Western Oregon University, and is in her third year of working in an alternative high school, and really enjoying it. “Who knew I would get along with delinquents so well?!” she said.  “I am working as the Business to School Liaison, which means my main responsibility is coordinating the Service Learning projects for the school, which is a lot of fun!”

Anna coordinated a school-wide Service Learning project involving Amnesty International’s Global Write-a-Thon event and the newspaper picked it up and ran an article about it.

Read the story here.

Anna wrote her senior history thesis on her father, Victor Sokolov, a prominent Russian dissident. The newspaper also spoke with her about her father.

Women admitted to UP!

January 24, 2013 By Mark

In 1951, the University of Portland began admitting women as students to the College of Arts and Sciences.  Though women had been admitted to nursing and music before the 1950s, since these were considered the proper sphere for women’s activities, the opening of CAS prompted the opening of the entire campus to women who wanted to study in any field.

The display featuring this milestone in the University’s history was created by the University Museum using photographs from the University Archives for the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center. Visit the display the next time you are in BC!

American women in the 1950s:

In her best-selling 1963 publication, The Feminine Mystique, Betty Friedan painted a picture of a 1950s world in which a life of domesticity proved the only option available for American women, noting that college admission rates for women had actually declined from the 1920s to the 1950s.  Although Friedan’s claim accurately reflected some aspects of 1950s America- including the shifting gender ideologies brought about by the post-World War II era- it didn’t capture or define all of American women’s experiences in the 1950s.

In reality during the 1950s American women continued to attend college; they continued to work outside of the home (in fact married women’s labor force participation, increasing since the 1920s, continued to climb upward throughout the 1950s); women continued to be involved in political activities, spearheading some of the first anti-nuclear and peace organizations of the McCarthy era; and, though often over-looked, women such as Ella Baker, Pauli Murray, Rosa Parks, and Jo Ann Robinson played critical roles in laying the groundwork for and organizing the Civil Rights Movement.

Beacon Receives National Recognition

November 21, 2012 By casdept

By: Nancy Copic, Assistant Director of Student Media & Adviser to The Beacon

From THE BEACON BLOG

When I saw the email subject line “Gold Circle Winners Announced,” my reflex was to steel myself for disappointment. My expectations could not have been lower.

Gold Circle Awards are national awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association based at the graduated school of the Columbia School of Journalism in N.Y. There are so many better-funded, impressively-staffed college journalism programs and student media programs out there, I believed The Beacon could maybe score an honorable mention. At best.

Not that I don’t swell with pride over the work of the students journalists at The Beacon. I obviously had enough faith to enter The Beacon’s work. It’s just that, well, our little Beacon, we’re not really in the major leagues. Are we? The email revealed the surprising (to me, at least) answer: Yes, at least in 6  awards categories. Six awards and three certificates of merit (honorable mention). Did I mention these are national awards?

Molly’s Legacy

October 5, 2012 By Mark

The first recipient of the Molly Hightower Memorial Scholarship joins the UP community

By Kate Stringer ,  Staff Writer stringer14@up.edu

From The BEACON

Two and a half years ago, 3,000 miles away from Portland, an earthquake struck Haiti and buried two UP alumnae under a fallen building.

While 2009 graduate Rachel Prusynski escaped, her friend and fellow ’09 graduate Molly Hightower did not.

Not too far away from Hightower and Prusynski, current UP freshman Jean-Francois Seide felt the room shaking while watching TV in his apartment with three friends.

“We ran out and the house collapsed and I lost everything,” Seide said. “I was sleeping in the street for three days, three nights.”
