What were some 2023 highlights?

In 2023, University of Portland’s Operations Management Association (UPOMA) hosted two main events, the Mock Speed Networking Event and the UPOMA OTM Speed Networking Event. These gatherings provided students with valuable opportunities to engage with a total of 11 UP alumni and representatives from 14 diverse companies, including notable professionals from Nike, Toyota, and more.

The quick and concise format of these sessions enhanced students’ networking skills, deepened their understanding of industry dynamics and facilitated meaningful connections. Overall, the year was marked by successful initiatives that bridged the gap between academic knowledge and real-world applications, laying a solid foundation for future networking opportunities and professional growth.

What are you hoping to accomplish in 2024?

In 2024, UPOMA is looking forward to our annual Helping Hands Event scheduled for May. Building on the success of previous years, this event holds special significance as it allows us to extend our support to those in countries where healthcare access may not be as widespread. Our goal is to assemble a significant number of prosthetic hands, contributing to the well-being of individuals in need.

Through our collective efforts, we aim to make a tangible difference in the lives of those who receive these prosthetics. Moreover, we value the spirit of collaboration and community engagement that defines UPOMA. Despite financial challenges, the support from Dean Michael DeVaughn and Dr. Mitchell was instrumental in our success this past year. The achievements of past events, including the most recent one where 20 prosthetic hands were assembled with the help of 63 volunteers, have motivated us to set ambitious goals for the upcoming year.

How can students apply for scholarships?

Staying informed within UPOMA involves regularly checking email for announcements and joining the UPOMA mailing list, where professors in the OTM program  often share new opportunities and programs.

Additionally, for a broader range of exciting opportunities for OTM students, beyond scholarships, OTM students are advised to contact professors to be included in the OTM central Moodle page—a centralized platform for important announcements and diverse educational initiatives.

Students can also explore external scholarship resources such as Scholarship America, College Board Scholarship Search, Fastweb, Sallie Mae College Scholarships, and Peterson’s Scholarship Search.

These platforms offer a comprehensive range of scholarship opportunities. Regularly checking both UPOMA channels and external platforms will ensure that students are well-positioned to access a variety of scholarships and programs that contribute to their educational and professional journey.
