About UPIA

The University of Portland Investment Association (UPIA) experienced significant growth, reaching a portfolio value of $700,000. Led by Max Daniels, Riley Higgins, Amber Shen, and Kaden Rossi, UPIA and its members meet bi-monthly to discuss how to invest the club’s 700k investment portfolio.

The UPIA serves as a place for students to discover their professional selves with activities aimed at enhancing members’ understanding of the financial landscape through networking and investing experience with real money.

Guest Speakers

UPIA hosted guest speakers Lilah Segal-Angel and Daniel Verburg from Banneker Partners who discussed an internship opportunity and intricacies of private equity. The club welcomed back UP MBA alumna and Certified Financial Planner (CFP) Heidi Goertzen who provided an intro to investing.

The 2024 spring semester kicked off with Charlie Forsyth of Umpqua Bank who offered valuable perspectives on small business lending to members of UPIA and the Entrepreneurship & Innovation club. These sessions deepened members’ understanding of the finance world and provide an opportunity to network with local professionals.

Networking

The UPIA leadership’s annual trip to New York City provided  invaluable insights into the investment industry, bridging the gap between the academic and the real world.

Meetings with investment professionals at Piper Sandler, Advanced Portfolio Management, Longwave Financial and BNY Mellon offered diverse perspectives on trading strategies, research analysis, and wealth management.

Discussions emphasized the importance of hands-on experience, networking, and working hard. Overall, the trip serves as a seed for the future of UPIA. This semester that seed will sprout as leadership plans to host a guest speaker from Wall Street!

2024 and Onward

The investment industry is growing fast in Portland, and it is the UPIA’s goal to grow with it. Come to the meetings often to gain access to a valuable and fast-growing network right here in Portland.

Goodbye Bloomberg

In anticipation of the Bloomberg Terminals leaving the university, the club began the 2023 fall semester with a Bloomberg Lab workshop to make sure members got firsthand experience with the terminal. Come to our meetings this semester to learn about the new software provided by the school, FactSet.
