Not long ago this business major was not a business major. When I started college 3 years ago I was a Chemistry major. Chemistry means lot of labs which means almost all chemistry majors live in Swindells Hall, the lab facility. I remember studying late into the night and even taking the occasional nap or two on the third floor lounge. Since my visitation day I’ve always loved this building. I love the high tech, modern feel to the building. I haven’t been inside Swindells since I changed my major freshmen year. Since it has been a while since I’ve been inside Swindells, my friend Katie gave me a tour of the labs and things students and professors alike are working on.
(Posters summarizing student research that I didn’t understand)
As you walk into the building you see posters (like the ones above) detailing research done by students with professors. An amazing opportunity that students have on campus in the science majors is to work with professors and help with research. My friend Katie is currently working with Dr. Valente and researches pseudo acids. She got really technical in explaining her research, but overall it sounded like she was having fun! Plus, it’s impressive to know professors all across campus at UP are willing to work with students and give them every possible opportunity to succeed. Katie really feels like this experience has helped her prepare not only for working in a professional laboratory setting, but also for graduate research, which is awesome!
(Katie and a reaction she’s working on)
It was also impressive to see some of the projects students were working on in class. Katie showed me all the awesome, advanced equipment that students were able to work with. Overall, this tour of Swindells lab made me realize why I chose to go to a school like UP. Regardless of your major, professors and people all over campus are willing to work with you and make sure you have the tools you need succeed in your desired career path!
