Long-time Partnership with Portland Business Journal Continues
For over 20 years (as reviewed in the archives!), University of Portland has been a valued, long-time partner of the Portland Business Journal (PBJ) over the years across many paths. Recently, for example, within news and advertising of the University of Portland’s newest President, Dr. Kelly, and as a partner at the Manufacturing Awards that offers a special UP Shiley-Marcos Center for Design & Innovation award to an honoree annually.
The business school has established a strong partnership with the PBJ over the years, collaborating on several high-profile events that highlight industry trends and foster networking opportunities. This collaboration has included leadership forums, panel discussions, and award ceremonies that bring together influential business leaders, alumni, and students. By leveraging the PBJ’s extensive reach and expertise in the business community, the business school has been able to enhance its visibility and provide valuable insights to its stakeholders, ultimately enriching the educational experience and strengthening community ties.

Portland Business Journal’s Female Leaders
Among the team’s respective tenures within American City Business Journals (ACBJ), there is a collective 52 years of experience. And over 60 in media prior to PBJ roles:

Candace Beeke, Publisher and market president, holds former titles of reporter, editor and publisher of several sister ACBJ markets.
Suzanne Stevens has been Portland’s editor in chief since 2013, with years as managing editor prior.
Krista Tappan joined as an account executive in 2013, holding 12 years on team PBJ overall, 6 as director of sales.
Sam Lewis joined PBJ in 2023 as director of events, bringing locally executed event development tenure to the Journal’s expansive events division.
Mollie Wackler is our most senior account executive on the sales team and has over 9 years at the Journal, with several years of media experience prior to PBJ.
PBJ (One of the only) All Female-led Business Journals
Out of the 45 markets under the ACBJ umbrella nation-wide, Portland is one of two all-female executive leadership teams of publisher, editor, director of sales, and director of events. The majority of PBJ staff in each department is also predominantly women.

PBJ’s Unique Style
Portland stands out for our award-winning news reporting that speaks to distinctive local and regional stories that impact our community. Additionally, Portland’s creative programming and engagement vehicles to build on the core of our market’s strengths of relationship-building and networking is distinctive among ACBJ.
The Dynamic of PBJ’s Female-based team
Our dynamic is much like any other executive leadership team in that we effectively communicate and deliver on our mission as a business journal within our market. Collaboration, creativity and a cohesive work ethic that supports each other’s respective departments and goals are standing values we hold as a team and carry forward year over year.
The Best Part of the Work Day
Collectively, for our team, we enjoy the variety of each day in all forms. The news cycle lends itself naturally to no day being like any other, which translates into each of our departments. Each manager also highly respects and enjoys supporting their team members in reaching their personal and professional goals, and we keep that top of mind throughout the year as servant leaders.
Impactful Projects with UP School of Business
One of the most impactful partnerships we’ve had with UP School of Business has been as a longtime, annual supporter of the Journal’s BizWomen Coalition (BWC), which is a women leader membership that is specific to only Portland that the PBJ started over 10 years ago. The BWC provides a place of gathering and interaction to build relationships, grow business and support industry among C-level and top executive women.
UP School of business has forged a strong partnership with the Portland Business Journal (PBJ) through the Executives of the Year event, formerly known as the CFO of the Year awards. This collaboration celebrates outstanding financial leadership and recognizes the achievements of top executives in the region. By working together, the business school and PBJ have created a prestigious platform that not only honors excellence in finance but also fosters connections among industry leaders, alumni, and students. This enduring partnership has significantly enhanced the visibility of both organizations and contributed to the professional development of future business leaders.
