The Students at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic High School, a partner school of the University of Portland through its Moreau Pathway Program, attended DECA Washington’s State Development Conference held in Bellevue, WA this past November. The School of Business connected with its officers to learn more about what prompted that launch of the new chapter.

Why did Seton High School start a DECA chapter?

The idea for a DECA chapter began with several students who expressed a strong interest in starting one. Since our school did not yet offer DECA, our president, Kai Scribner, took the initiative to find an advisor and begin the planning process. Our goal in establishing a DECA chapter was to give students early exposure to business, marketing, and entrepreneurship.

Who was involved in researching the opportunity to start a DECA chapter?

With the support of our advisor, Mrs. Nolte, we officially launched our DECA chapter. One of our first major steps was attending the Fall Leadership Conference, where we learned about DECA’s mission, operations, and what it takes to build a successful chapter. Ultimately, our advisor, president, and founding members worked together to generate interest and excitement among students.

How was the launch Promoted?

We promoted the launch through social media, morning chapel announcements, and the school newsletter to reach as many students as possible. We began with a small group of interested students, educating them about DECA, which helped build momentum. Our school community has been incredibly supportive, and we are grateful to offer these new opportunities to our students.

How many members do you currently have?

  • Vice President: Presleigh Dervin
  • VP of Finance: Soha Chopra
  • VP of Leadership: Kendall Curtis
