Volunteers gather in Bauccio Commons to build prosthetic hands

The UP Operations Management Association (UPOMA) held the annual “Helping Hands” event this past week on April 11 at University of Portland.

Helping Hands is a program offered by corporate team building organization called Odyssey Teams, Inc. The goal is to build prosthetic hands for amputees in developing countries.

UPOMA first began participating in this initiative in 2017, while assisting club advisor, Professor Gary Mitchell’s Lake Oswego based robotics team, Team Axis #7187. At the time, UPOMA frequently partnered and mentored Team Axis. Although Team Axis has since disbanded, UPOMA and Professor Mitchell have continued the initiative and have since invited the OTM Executive Advisory Board and alumni to attend.

This year, 63 volunteers gathered and assembled 20 prosthetic hands. This brings the total number of assembled hands through UPOMA’s sponsored events to 104!
