Dr. Claire Costin, Professor of Accounting
Research Highlights
Dr. Costin’s current research is focused on the diversity space across the accounting profession and integrating equitable, trauma-informed safe spaces for students.
She is working on three projects that directly impact the world of accounting:
Fraud Case – Examining the implicit and explicit biases of people working in accounting by assessing the guilt of suspects by how they perceive the verdict.
Data Analysis – Conducting a survey among accountants, Professor Costin is evaluating DEI initiatives among working professionals by inquiring the resources and tools available at their respective firms and how practitioners use these platforms to move the needle to transform the practice.
Pipeline for Students – Surveying students on the various reasons they have selected the accounting profession and what implications that will have on the industry.

- Understand how sexism and racism impact the decision-making of accounting professionals

- Providing a safe space for students in the classroom
- Increasing equitability among students to allow them the opportunity and resources to pursue accounting

- Serving as the business school’s representative on the inaugural “Teaching Scholars Program” at University of Portland
- Served as the Accounting expert for the business school’s “Silicon Valley Bank Collapse” Learning Labs series (free webinar for UP and the business community)
