Professor Presentations ~ Dr. Leavenworth DuFault
What do a tiny Newfoundland fishing village and a public policy conference in Washington, D.C. have in common? This summer, Dr. Beth Leavenworth DuFault bridged that distance with her presentation at the 2025 American Marketing Association’s Public Policy Conference.
She was invited to speak to share her research (co-authored with Dr. John Schouten of Memorial University of Newfoundland) based on a 6-year immersive ethnography with a social enterprise that teaches heritage fishing skills and “blue foods” sustainability to youth, newcomers, and tourists.
The paper they presented, “Caught Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea,” shows how marketing and public policy can either hinder or help such community-based efforts to thrive. The work reflects the University of Portland’s commitment to ethical engagement, environmental justice, and scholarly impact beyond the classroom.
