There comes a time in every business student’s life where they must face the indescribable horrors of a mock interview. Or, as some others might see it, an extremely helpful experience that gives insight into the real world job finding process. Mock interviews may sound scary but they are a relaxed experience intent on helping, not hurting, you.

My first mock interview experience freshman year found me a bundle of nerves going in. I was taking the interview too seriously and was sabotaging myself. However, a few minutes into the interview, conversation was flowing and my nerves were suddenly alleviated. The first interviews that students do are group interviews and consist of you and usually two or so other people with one business professional.

It helps to have other people around the first time in a mock interview as it helps alleviate the stress some. Interviews shouldn’t be a frightening idea but should be taken as a challenge and approached appropriately. How do you that? Easy! With these three simple steps, you’ll be on your way to success in no time.

1. Be prepared. You’ll usually be given the name or business of your interviewer, so look them up! In any interview (mock or otherwise) it is always the best idea to know who you’re dealing with. Read up on the company and the individual. Be prepared to answer some common questions regarding experience and also be sure to have a few of your own for the representative as well!

2. Dress appropriately. I know this is beaten into students from day one but it is an important concept. This also relates to preparedness! If you’re meeting with an accounting representative, look the part! Some companies are relaxed when it comes to dress codes and may not even have one. If you’re unsure, go for business casual! Looking polished never hurts in an interview.

3. Relax! Your worst enemy in an interview is yourself. If you make yourself nervous, you’ll have a harder time easing into your environment and may set yourself up for destruction. The person interviewing you is not out to get you and in mock interviews, they’re there to help! Utilize their experience. If you feel like you’re having trouble – say so! Ask for tips. Mock interviews are an awesome opportunity, so do everything you can to better yourself for it.

Remember that not having a great interview is not the end of the world. I’ve had good and bad interviews and they’re all part of the learning process. If you have a bad interview, shake it off and get back out there! And don’t forget to send a thank you note!

And if you’re jumping after an interview like the guy second from the right, you know you’ve done it right.
