Residence Hall Move-Out: Important Information to Know

  • Residence halls close at noon on Friday, May 3.
  • The deadline for students to request a late stay of one additional day is Friday, April 26th. Late stays are reserved mostly for students, especially our international students, whose flights home do not coincide with the Friday noon check-out.
  • Graduating seniors may stay until noon on Monday, May 6 at no additional charge. However, fines may still apply if they do not follow check-out procedures or do not turn in their key to staff.
  • Please note: Unused meal points do not carry over to the next academic year. These points will go away after the Thursday night meal on May 2. Students can purchase food with cash, debit or credit on Friday morning.

What do students need to do before they leave?

  • Make an appointment with their RA by April 28th for a time to check out of their room.
    • There is a $75 ‘improper check out fine’ if students miss their scheduled RA appointment check out.
  • Turn in room keys to the staff member that checks you out. Keys left in the room could result in a ‘lost key’ charge of $100.
  • Remove all personal belongings from the residence hall by noon on Friday, May 3, or by noon on the approved late stay date. Remind your student that this includes trash!
  • Clean the room: Remove posters from walls and ceilings, wipe down and dust all surfaces (desks, wardrobes, etc..), clean sink, and mirror, and vacuum/mop floors. A fine will be applied to all students who lived in the room if it is deemed not clean. Talk to your student about how they and their roommate will manage the final cleaning if one of them checks out earlier than the other.
  • Recycle as much as possible! Donation bins will be available to donate items they no longer need. Dumpsters will be available for non-recyclable items. Empty wastebaskets and do not leave garbage in public areas.
  • Return any Bon Appétit items in the room (silverware, trays, cups) to the Commons or to a designated box in your hall lobby/lounge.

We trust that students will leave their residence hall home in great condition; if these steps are not followed, a fine could be posted to their student account as outlined in the housing contract. Parents and families, please understand that fines are not meant to be punitive; they are imposed when well-informed students do not follow the move-out procedures that are designed for an efficient move-out process for hundreds of students in each residence hall on move-out day.

Need to check out on May 3 after noon? Have your student talk to your hall director by April 28th to arrange a late checkout.

Need to check out after May 5th? Your student can complete a late stay request form on eRezLife before April 26. The room rate for late stays is $55 per night and is charged to their student account.

Need to store items? Each residence hall has a ‘trunk room’ where students can reserve a cube that fits two plastic storage bins. Space is limited and priority is given to students that are returning to the community next Fall. There is no charge associated with using the hall trunk room. Students can contact their hall staff for more details; hall staff typically announce trunk room sign ups in early April.

Need local summer storage if your student is living off-campus next year? The closest storage facilities to campus are on Lombard Street in North Portland. A quick ‘storage near me’ Google search using the zip code 97203 can help you and your student determine the best option for your needs.

Students may direct questions to hall staff or to the Office of Residence Life in Tyson 123 or at reslife@up.edu or 503-943-7205.
