Demystifying the Meal Plan Process

For students living on campus, signing up for the right Meal Plan before arriving to campus can be tricky. How do you know if you’ve got the right plan for your own eating habits? Luckily, students have a grace period in which they can figure out how much (or how little) they are eating and can compare their spending by utilizing Bon Appetit’s Meal Plan Spending Chart. This useful tool can help students determine if they need to raise or lower their Meal Plan level or keep the one they have. Students with Meal Plans can use their Student ID Card to make food purchases on campus. Each time students purchase food, their receipt will show their point balance; by keeping track of their spending habits during their first weeks on campus, they will be able to make an informed decision on which Meal Plan will be best for them. Students have until the second Friday of Fall semester or the first Friday of Spring semester to change their Meal Plan. After that time, their Meal Plan can not be changed.

For instructions on how to change to a different Meal Plan level, please visit the Meal Plan page. A refund will be issued if they choose a lower Meal Plan level and there is no current balance on their student account. Otherwise the difference will be credited toward their current balance.

If your student ends up with more points than they need after Fall semester, the remaining points will roll over into Spring semester, but you’ll still need to purchase a Meal Plan for Spring, as stated in your students’ housing contract. In cases like this, it can make sense to purchase a lower level Meal Plan for Spring. At the end of Spring semester, ALL points go away after the Thursday night meal during Finals Week.
