Helping your Student Prepare for an On-Campus Job

Is your student interested in working on campus during the school year? Getting an on-campus job is a great way for your student to familiarize themselves with the UP community and meet people. Here are some details on how you can support your student in preparing for an on-campus job with Student Employment.

Fall job openings were posted on the Student Job Board starting August 1. Students are able to access a shortcut to the Student Job Board under the Quick Launch menu in PilotsUP.

In order to get a job on campus, students (like all employees) must complete federal hiring paperwork: Form I-9 for work authorization and Form W-4 for IRS tax withholding. To complete the Form I-9, the student must provide a photo ID (the UP Student ID is recommended, as it doesn’t expire) along with one of the following documents for us to verify their eligibility to work in the United States:

  • U.S. Passport (not expired), or
  • Birth Certificate (original document—no copies or scans), or
  • Social Security Card (original document—no copies or scans)

Parents can help most effectively by making sure their student has at least one of the above employment eligibility documents and remind their student to bring that to school with them. (All student employees also need to know their correct Social Security Number if they are not presenting an original Social Security Card to complete the Form I-9, because a correct Social Security Number is required on both the Form I-9 and the Form W-4 in order for UP to complete the hiring process).

Please note that international students need to contact International Student Services at 503.943.7367 or iss@up.edu for assistance in getting the documentation they need before applying for on-campus jobs.
