In my interview this past week with Treefort performer, Landon Spencer, we were able to talk about his band The Bed Heads” and why they are known to be the sleepiest band in the Pacific Northwest. Spencer said “God gives his latest shows to his sleepiest soldiers,” when asked what makes them so sleepy? He believes The Bed Heads is appropriate name for their band of messy hairs guys who love to sleep in.

Spencer describes his band as an “indie rock band”, drawing inspiration from artists like Father John Misty and Bendigo Fletcher, specifically their album, Fitz of Laughter, as well as Baby Jake’s Beautiful Blue collar boy album. He discusses his love and respect for Tom Petty and his influence on Spencer as he grew up listening to Petty’s 1994 album, Wilderflowers.

The Bed Heads have two new singles, one out this past week, “Nancy Kerrigan”, and their next single “Love Refused” out on August 30th, in just three weeks.

After coming to the end of their Washington tour, The Bed Heads finished off their PNW tour with performances at the Treefort Music Festival in Boise, Idaho. Spencer wasn’t just on stage with his band, but also performed twice on the Treefort bus line, Treeline #1. There, I was lucky enough to get to say hey after our phone interview the day prior. He described his past of playing at random bars in Highschool as he was trying to get his start as a musician and how this is sort of an ode to that — its similar to a moving bar, with the same cramped and acoustic vibe. When asked about his bus performance, Spencer said it was “going to be so much fun”. He played songs new and old and was accompanied by his fellow bandmate on the Saturday 3:30 Treeline #1. He was able to give out temporary tattoos (which I was able to snag one of).

When asked about his more stationary performance at Payette Brewing, Spencer named all the people that helped make their performance successful including the band before them, Telander, from Austin, Texas. He thanked Zack, John, Ryan, Rob, and Jessie, as well as the stage manager Kenzie. Spencer referred to the performance as a great time with a lot of hype.

Spencer was excited to be one of the very creative minds that come together to put on Treefort every year. He has helped out in the past, making some of his greatest friends at Treefort but now gets to perform and have so much fun. He got to share a house with another band performing at Treefort, regarding there is “not a lot of sleep, too much Mario Tennis”. Something that drives Spencer’s love for Treefort is his ability to go from seeing your friends perform on one stage then going one street over to see some of your favorite bands. “All your favorite bands are in one spot”, says Spencer, “everyone is just creating art all around”. He describes Treefort as “what you have always wished any music event is like”.

The Bed Heads are going on tour with Baby Jake in May! (Catch them in Portland!)
