The credits have rolled for summer 2016-the rain has started, burrito bowls have been served, and the consumption of caffeine only increases from here. And yes, we do have to give some of that freedom gained by summer back, but in the exchange for something wonderful: the chance to once again pick up our books, engage in the community, and see all the people we’ve missed all summer. Or, at the very least, have a chance to listen to fresh, new music broadcasted all-day, every-day on KDUP!

This year KDUP is utilizing a new model to help all students around UP have the a better opportunity to join in with the music and community. Instead of students starting their time at KDUP as DJs, students now need to volunteer with the KDUP Street Team for one semester. After one semester volunteering, students then have the opportunity to apply for their own show (Music of the 90s? Show dedicated to just soundtracks? The options are limitless.). After deliberating on the change in format, the KDUP team feels this method will create a more inclusive environment and a better chance to engage with KDUP. This allows everyone involved in the KDUP program to participate on all sides of the experience, inducing helping with promotion of the station, listening to great music, going to concerts, and making the deep connections that music help foster.

Arran Fagan, General Manager of KDUP, has this to say about the transition:  “We decided to go with this model of volunteers to DJ’s because we felt that it would help further our community here at KDUP. In the past staff members, DJ’s, and street team members hardly interacted. With this new method we are hoping to create more friendships, more opportunities, more engagement between the whole of KDUP, and a way to find future staff members, instead of each group sticking together and never engaging fully with the other parts of KDUP.”

This semesters the KDUP streaming schedule will be full of returning DJs with opportunities for members of Street Team to apply for shows in the spring. If you would like more information about volunteering with KDUP Street Team or eventually becoming a DJ, please join us in front of the Quiet Side of the Commons today (9/8) at 7:30 PM or email volunteer coordinator Alicia Romero at romeroa18@up.edu.
