Summer might be temporary, but Surf Rock is forever. Don’t believe me? Trust these guys, they’re the experts.

An indie surf rock band quickly emerging from the college music scene, the Trestles are on the move and have been climbing the charts since their formation in 2020. Originating in Santa Cruz, California, the band formed for a post-pandemic performance and have been together ever since. A common misconception about the band name incorrectly links them to the Southern California area, but the real backstory is a lot closer to home. Trestles are bridge supports that allow trains to be carried over valleys and rivers which, coincidentally, are frequent hangout spots for teens in the Santa Cruz and Capitola areas. One goal the band had when they first started was to be able to play shows outside of their hometown, and coming all the way to Portland, Oregon, they have certainly achieved that.

Before each show, the band huddles together and sings the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ theme, generating enough energy to power their whole set. As someone who has seen them perform, it is evident that their pre-show tradition allows them to feel hyped up and confident on stage. Speaking of hyped up, the band noted that one of their favorite memories from making their most recent album, ‘Salt,’ was recruiting friends to squish in a recording booth together for background shouts and cheers. Tuning the bass between each take, the band practiced patience coupled with excitement as they built their most recent album from the ground up.

Some of the band’s bucket list items include: playing Red Rocks amphitheater, having a branded Wavestorm board sold at Costco, and being one of the bands fortunate enough to have a taco named after them at the HomeState Taco shop in LA. That sounds to me like a pretty solid list fit for an up-and-coming Indie Surf Rock band.

The Trestles have without a doubt become experts in gathering people together to rock, roll, and feel the energy of the California sunshine, and it was such a pleasure to chat with them and see their talent live.
