Politics for Pilots: Internships with the ODP

The Oregon Democratic Party is seeking interns for their Events and Operations, Communications, and Development positions. Internships will last between 3 and 6 months, and you will be expected to work between 15-20 hours a week.

 

The ideal intern has:

  • Keen attention to detail
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent social and critical thinking skills
  • Aptitude for creative thinking and output
    • A positive, can-do attitude and enthusiasm for the task at hand
    • Basic technological proficiency
    • Ability to be fluid with job dutiesand responsibilities
      • Some familiarity with the workings of government and issues in Oregon politics
      • Any kind of previous activism in a progressive cause is preferred

The Events and Operations Intern and Development Intern will begin on or before December 2, and the Communications Intern will begin on or before January 6. Each position has a series different tasks listed below:

The Development Intern:

This intern will work closely with the Development and Operations Directors on projects including:

  • Plan, promote, and execute major donor events, including the annual Wayne Morse Gala
  • Donor research and prospecting
  • Grassroots monthly donor membership drives
  • Data entry and integrity
  • Attend DPO events and liaise with guest speakers and elected officials

The Communications Intern:

This intern will work closely with DPO’s Marketing Director and field researchers on a range of projects:

  • Draft new web content, emails, press releases, and social media copy
  • Monitor local press outlets, compile clips for distribution to DPO staff
  • Research politically active individuals and compile media profiles
  • Prepare and transcribe quotes for press use
  • Perform regular content maintenance on dpo.org
  • Attend DPO events and liaise with guest speakers and elected officials

The Events and Operations Intern:

This intern will work closely with the Operations Director and other staff members on projects including:

  • Planning, promoting, and executing major events, including the annual Wayne Morse Gala and the biennial Democratic Platform Convention
  • Creating and managing correspondence, organizational systems, and promotional materials
  • Volunteer recruitment and management
  • Attend DPO events and liaise with guest speakers and elected officials
  • Donor research and prospecting

In addition to the above, all interns also help:

  • Assist and attend staff meetings, trainings, service events and other DPO projects as needed
    • Perform basic office functions such as answering phones, responding to messages, and data entry
    • Receive guests and volunteers as they enter the office, answer general questions
    • Participate in grassroots efforts, such as phone banks, canvasses, and voter registration drives
