Last fall, University of Portland’s English honor society, Sigma Tau Delta (also known by the somewhat unfortunate acronym STD!), inducted seventeen students as its very first members. This spring—just last Thursday—the second official induction ceremony was held, welcoming seven new students into STD. In order to join STD, students must be English majors or minors and have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher. STD members participate in a number of scholarly and volunteer activities, all relating to English. This year, students in STD have done volunteer work at the School of Education Reading Fair, and upcoming activities include a Powell’s Books scavenger hunt and a Read-In at the Anchor.
The induction last Thursday night began with a brief intro from English Department Chair Dr. Hiro and STD officers Cerice Keller and Leah Becker. Following the introduction was the induction. Current STD members, as well as English Department faculty, shared stories and facts about the new members and celebrated everything they have to offer to STD. The night ended with a closing speech from Dr. Larson, titled “Dialectical Thinking in a Righteous Age.” Overall, it was a night of food and fun and a celebration of the English Department and its students.
