Interested students should obtain an internship application from the Communication Studies Department Office (BC 262) the semester prior to starting the program. Once the advisor (Dr. Jennette Lovejoy) receives a completed application and resume, she will help guide students in obtaining interviews with various organizations. Internships focus on the student’s career area, which could include public relations, advertising, corporate communication, marketing communication, sales or journalism.
Internship procedures are designed to permit the department advisor and the employing organization supervisor to closely monitor the intern’s progress. Interns are required to maintain and submit a journal of their experiences on the job, along with periodic reports on newly acquired skills and the application of communication concepts studied in other classes.
Internship advisor meetings will focus on these topics. Interns will be evaluated on criteria such as attendance, willingness to learn new skills, performance in the assigned position and written reports as well as a portfolio that documents their accomplishments.
Depending on the hours spent on the job, students may enroll for either three or six credit hours of internship. To earn three credits a total of 150 hours must be completed. To earn six credits a total of 300 hours must be completed. Only three credit hours may be applied to the major.
