Donohoe_Sarah_web-copyUniversity of Portland student Sarah Donohoe has been awarded a prestigious Truman Scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Donohoe, a biology major, is from Juneau, Alaska. This is the second Truman Scholarship recipient from the University of Portland; the first was Geoffrey Painter in 2000.The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation reviewed 655 applications from 294 institutions for this year’s scholarship. Students were selected based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement.

Each  Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 for graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government. Recipients must be U.S. citizens, have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills, be in the top quarter of their class, and be committed to careers in government or the non-profit sector. There have been 2,906 Truman Scholars selected since the first awards were made in 1977.

Last year, Donohoe was also a recipient of an Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). This scholarship comes with funding for both junior and senior years as well as a summer internship. Recipients are students who have a background in marine science and who are planning to pursue a career in some aspect of marine science. Donohoe is the first University of Portland student to win a Hollings Scholarship.
