Parents Night Out, May 9th

ollieBLAHUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, May 9, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $30 per child and $40 for two children and includes dinner for the kids. All UP faculty and staff are welcome to take advantage of this service. Summer Construction Projects

under-construction-sign-22472640The end of the school year marks the start of summer construction and repair efforts on campus, which will include:

  • Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center construction begins May 9, ends in July 2015. Fencing will be set up around the perimeter of the public safety block and the parking lot across from the Chiles center will be closed. Parking will be available in the main parking lot. Public Safety has relocated across the street to Haggerty 101. The TriMet bus stop (line #35) located on the corner of Portsmouth and Strong will be relocated across Willamette to the corner of Portsmouth and Willamette.
  • Tyson garage remodeling: starts in May, ends in September. Garage will be closed and remodeled into office space over the summer. The intent is for IT organization to move into this new space during fall semester.
  • Shipstad Hall: May-August. This summer the University will be replacing windows in Shipstad Hall with new double-pane windows.
  • Main entrance drive remodeling, May-August. The entrance will be repaved, the center median re-planted, and raised crosswalks will be added near Shipstad and the main parking lot turn to increase visibility and safety. One side of the driveway will be cloased at a time, and traffic will be limited to in-bound only. Exiting traffic will be asked to leave via the Portsmouth exit or the Kenna Hall exit.

UP Announces O’Dea International Scholarship

ODea-copyThe University of Portland has established the O’Dea International Scholarship, endowed by  G. Kelly O’Dea ’70, an alumnus of the Salzburg Study Abroad Program. Valued in excess of $100,000, the scholarship is named in honor of his family, which includes two additional Salzburg alumni, Julie and Kitty.

The scholarship is intended to encourage global learning and exchange by assisting deserving University of Portland scholars in that pursuit. The scholarship will give a preference to students with financial need who are participating in the Salzburg program. Other possible scholarship recipients are students with financial need who are enrolled in a university program that involves “global change and cross-culture collaboration through international study and travel.”

Cited in a Harvard Business School case as “a global marketing pioneer, business builder and change leader,” O’Dea’s resume includes serving as president of worldwide clients at Ogilvy & Mather and president of Foote Cone & Belding Worldwide, both top global communications companies. He is currently chairman of AllianceHPL, a private strategic services firm focused on applied innovation for large multi-national companies. He has served for 12 years on the University’s board of regents.

2014 Commencement, May 4th

2012Commencement-7003533-X3The University is preparing for a record number of graduates in its 2014 spring commencement exercises on Sunday, May 4, set for 1:30 p.m. at the Earle A. and Virginia H. Chiles Center on campus, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd. University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., will confer an anticipated 818 bachelor’s degrees on Sunday. Also participating will be 111 students who expect to be awarded bachelor’s degrees at the end of the summer, for an all-time record 929 undergraduate students. Anne Thompson, NBC News’ Chief Environmental Affairs correspondent, will deliver the commencement address.

The University will hold a separate commencement ceremony for an anticipated 212 graduate students on Saturday, May 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the Chiles Center. Beauchamp will be the commencement speaker.

UP Listed In Princeton Review Guide to Green Colleges

green campus imageThe University of Portland has been included in the Princeton Review’s Guide to 332 Green Colleges: 2014 Edition, a free, downloadable publication released on Thursday, April 17, in celebration of Earth Day on Tuesday, April 22. UP was chosen along with Lewis & Clark College, Linfield College, Oregon State University, Portland State University, Southern Oregon University, and the University of Oregon.

The guide, published for the past five years in partnership with the U.S. Green Building Council’s Center for Green Schools, is the only free, comprehensive resource for college applicants that focuses solely on colleges that have demonstrated a strong commitment to the environment and to sustainability. UP Student Sarah Donohoe Wins Truman Scholarship

Donohoe_Sarah_web-copyUniversity of Portland student Sarah Donohoe has been awarded a prestigious Truman Scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Donohoe, a biology major, is from Juneau, Alaska. This is the second Truman Scholarship recipient from the University of Portland; the first was Geoffrey Painter in 2000.The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation reviewed 655 applications from 294 institutions for this year’s scholarship. Students were selected based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement.

Each  Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 for graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government. Recipients must be U.S. citizens, have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills, be in the top quarter of their class, and be committed to careers in government or the non-profit sector. There have been 2,906 Truman Scholars selected since the first awards were made in 1977.

Last year, Donohoe was also a recipient of an Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra­tion (NOAA). This scholarship comes with funding for both junior and senior years as well as a summer internship. Recipients are students who have a background in marine science and who are planning to pursue a career in some aspect of marine science. Donohoe is the first University of Portland student to win a Hollings Scholarship.

Spring 2014 Commencement, May 4

The University is preparing for a record number of graduates in its 2014 spring commencement exercises on Sunday, May 4, set for 1:30 p.m. , in the Chiles Center. University president Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C., will confer an anticipated 818 bachelor’s degrees on Sunday. Also participating will be 111 students who expect to be awarded bachelor’s degrees at the end of the summer, for an all-time record 929 undergraduate students. Anne Thompson, NBC News’ Chief Environmental Affairs correspondent, will deliver the commencement address and receive an honorary doctorate.

The University will hold a separate commencement ceremony for an anticipated 212 graduate students on Saturday, May 3, at 12:30 p.m., in the Chiles Center. Fr. Beauchamp will be the commencement speaker. No tickets are required for graduate commencement.

Receiving the University’s highest honor, the Christus Magister Medal, is Carolyn Woo, president and CEO of Catholic Relief Services (CRS), which reaches some 130 million people in nearly 100 countries annually with its relief and development work. Before joining CRS in 2012, Woo was dean and professor at the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza School of Business, and a vice president and professor at Purdue University.

Receiving honorary doctorates at the University’s May 4 commencement: Anne Thompson, NBC environmental affairs correspondent since 2007. She has traveled the world in that capacity, reporting on pollution, alternative fuels, global warming, land usage and new technologies, among many other topics. She began her broadcasting career at WNDU-TV in Indiana after her graduation from the University of Notre Dame.

John Beckman, of the Class of 1942, was instrumental in the invention of the photo-finish camera. Beckman, along with his wife Patricia, is a noted philanthropist to musical, historical, communal and educational causes in Oregon. He and Patricia are the founders of the University’s Humor Project, a multi-disciplinary effort to study and foment humor as a “spiritual and revolutionary energy in every field of endeavor, from business to politics to the arts and beyond.”

James Popham, of the Class of 1953, is a professor of education emeritus at UCLA, an internationally renowned scholar on testing methods and efficacy, and the author of many books. UCLA has honored him as one of its best 20 professors of the 20th century. Popham has been president of the American Educational Research Association, is the founding editor of the journal Educational Evaluation and Policy Analysis, and is a popular speaker who is often in demand for his humor as much as for his expertise in educational evaluation and measurement.

Ed Ray, president of Oregon State University since 2003, has directed a remarkable era at one of the state’s largest public universities. During his tenure, the school has raised more than $1 billion for students and faculty, developed a national reputation for research in science, opened and expanded the Oregon State U/Cascades campus in Bend, and successfully grappled with declining public funding.

Most Reverend Alexander Sample, the eleventh Archbishop of Portland in Oregon, was twice appointed a bishop by Pope Benedict XVI – first to the Diocese of Marquette, Michigan, in 2005, and then to Portland in 2013, succeeding Most Reverend John Vlazny.

Third Annual Sam Jam Fundraiser, April 16th

SamSliderThe third annual Sam Jam fundraiser will take place on Wednesday, April 16, at 7 p.m., in the Chiles Center. Members of the Pilot men’s and women’s basketball teams will compete in a wheelchair basketball game against the Portland Wheelblazers of Oregon Disability Sports to raise money for Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA).

Sam Jam was started by University of Portland alumnus Sam Bridgman, who was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia when he was 15 years old. Sam will be joining UP once again for this awesome event­—he will be speaking at the event and participating in the basketball game as well.
