With summer quickly approaching, are you starting to think about what might be next? The endless questions ring: What kind of internship should I get? Is it too late to get an internship?? I’m graduating and need a job! How do I get a job??
First, take a deep breath.
Okay, let’s get to it!
Remember, there are many methods to approach your job search. Here, we’re talking about using the specific tool, Handshake, tool to find sweet internships and jobs. Come visit us during Drop In hours if you want to explore additional strategies to broaden your searching process.
To give yourself some parameters for your search, consider the following questions:
- What do I want to get out of this? [What skills do you want to develop? What industry do you want to explore? What kind of professional network can I plug into?]
- Where do I want to complete it?
- When do I have time to devote to this internship?
Once you’ve narrowed down, time to start the search! Using Handshake, there are all sorts of ways to customize your search.
Start by Clicking “Jobs” on the top bar. You’ll see there are thousands of results.
To narrow this down, select “Internship,” “Full-Time Job” or “Part-Time” as the Job Type in top bar Filter under the Job search bar.
By filtering to internships or jobs only, this narrows down our results to a more manageable number of opportunities. You could also add in a location if you want to filter even further. Once you find one you’re interested in, you can “Favorite” it by selecting the star to the right of the job title, or view more details by clicking the job title directly.
You can apply directly, view “Similar Jobs,” and also see if the company has “Other Jobs” listed.
Another great thing about Handshake is that it curates lists for you based on preferences. On your homepage, once you login, “Jobs You’ve Favorited” appears at the top and several lists of collections of jobs appear if you scroll down. Here’s what your dashboard looks like when you log in.
If you are in the midst of searching for a particular job type in a particular location with a filter already set up, you can turn on email and in-app notifications to receive alerts about new related job postings or upcoming deadlines on your “Favorite” jobs.
We have also launched a new series on social media called “Shake Tips” which will be a curated list of tips and tricks! Follow us on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
