Orientation Mass Regalia: Please Order By July 18

tam copy2Faculty and staff who need to rent regalia for the Orientation Opening Mass on Saturday, August 27 are asked to please place your order online by Monday, July 18. Please visit UP’s Jostens page to place your order, click on Graduation Caps and Gowns, then select Faculty and Staff. You can place your order at this link.

Rented regalia will be available for pickup in the Chiles Center on Saturday, August 27, from 3 to 4:45 p.m.

Let Us Commence: Apr. 30-May 1

commence2The University of Portland 2016 Commencement weekend will take place on Saturday, April 30 and Sunday, May 1. The registrar’s office anticipates 871 undergraduate participants and 155 graduate participants. To accommodate the increasing number of graduates and family members, there will be two ceremonies this year: Commencement I, which begins at 10 a.m., is for graduates of the College of Arts and Sciences and School of Education; Commencement II, which starts at 2 p.m., is for graduates of the Pamplin School of Business, Shiley School of Engineering, and School of Nursing. Both ceremonies take place in the Chiles Center.

Regent D. Allen Lund and his wife, Kathleen Lund, will receive the University’s highest honor, the Christus Magister Medal. University alumnus Fedele Bauccio ’64, ’66 MBA, ’04 Hon., co-founder and CEO of Bon Appétit Management Company, will deliver the address for the morning ceremony, and Columbia Sportswear CEO Tim Boyle will receive an honorary doctorate and deliver the address at the afternoon commencement ceremony.

Other honorary doctorate recipients will be UP regent Steve Shepard ’58, educator and electrical engineer Eleanor Baum, Rev. Robert S. Pelton, C.S.C., women’s sports pioneer Cathy Rush, and University of Puget Sound president Ron Thomas.

Undergraduate and graduate degree candidates and faculty, related to their faculty assignment, are to be present at the Chiles Center no later than one hour before the ceremony begins (9 a.m. for Commencement I and 1 p.m. for Commencement II). The processions form in the north corridors and mezzanine of the Chiles Center. Enter the building through the north doors, off Portsmouth Avenue. Academic regalia will be worn; all faculty are expected to attend unless excused by their dean.

The School of Nursing pinning ceremony will take place on Saturday, April 30, at 1:30 p.m., in the Chiles Center. The ROTC graduation ceremony will take place that day at 3 p.m. in the Bauccio Commons.

The Baccalaureate Mass and reception will take place on Saturday at 5 p.m. in the Chiles Center. Graduates and faculty will assemble at 4:15 p.m. in the north corridors of the Chiles Center. The academic procession will begin promptly at 4:40 p.m. Academic regalia will be worn.

Anchors Away, April 28: You’re Invited!

anchorsAll University of Portland faculty and staff are invited to attend Anchors Away on Thursday, April 28, on the bluff behind Bauccio Commons. Please join us as the entire UP family gathers together to celebrate the conclusion of the 2015-16 academic year with a BBQ, beer garden, live music from the Junebugs, and lots of other fun activities. Please bring your family—there will be activities for kids including lawn games, spin art, and bubble artists. Tickets for faculty and staff are complimentary. Please RSVP by Tuesday, April 26 and a ticket will be delivered. RSVP at this link. Additional tickets for family and friends may be purchased; children 10 and under may attend for free. Faculty/Staff Kickball Game: It’s Back!

Free Tickets for Build, Remodel, and Landscape Show

Events Office Moves To New Location

moving vanThe university events office has moved from its house on Portsmouth Avenue to make way for the new student dormitory to be erected in that location, according to Sean Ducey, university events. Their office is now located in the physical plant parking lot, down the hill behind Orrico Hall in a double wide trailer. Contact information for events staff will remain unchanged.

Opening Mass Regalia Information

Opening MassThe fall 2015 semester’s Opening Mass will be held in the Chiles Center on Saturday, August 29, at 4:30 p.m., and all  faculty participating will process in regalia. Faculty who plan to process and need regalia are asked to visit the Josten’s site at this link.

All orders must be submitted by Monday, July 20 to avoid the late fee. Faculty members’ deans will decide if faculty are responsible for payment or if their departments will pay for the rental.

Faculty robing for Mass will be in the north lobby of the Chiles Center; those processing should arrive no later than 4 p.m. to prepare for the procession, which will begin at 4:15 p.m. A representative from Jostens will be available to assist and answer any questions with regard to regalia. Commencement Regalia Ordering

tam-copyFaculty and students planning to participate in the 2015 Commencement ceremonies may order their caps, gowns, and personalized graduate announcements at the Jostens ordering event in the Pilot House lounge on February 10, 11, and 12, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Orders may also be submitted online from February 10 through March 19.

Please note: any orders received after March 19 will incur a special-handling fee of $15.

Come Wish Billy Well, July 25

billy copyUniversity events associate director Billy McWood will leave his position at the end of this week to accompany his wife as she begins graduate school in Virgina, according to his colleague Carol Welch. A party in Billy’s honor will take place on Friday, July 25, from 2:30 t0 4 p.m., at the events house on North Portsmouth. All are welcome to wish Billy well in his new endeavors.

Billy graduated from UP in 2008 and during his time as a student he worked for the university events office. Upon graduation he joined the staff in the development office and moved from there to university events. For more information contact university events at 7523 or events@up.edu.
