Truman Scholarship Nominations Welcome

Faculty are requested to nominate students for Truman Scholarships. The awards, up to $30,000 for graduate school, provide scholarships to current juniors who plan to pursue a career in public service (academia, government, military, or nonprofit service). The awards are based on merit and are made to students who have a track record of working to impact social change. An understanding of how the student leads others is an important criterion in the evaluation process.

An institutional endorsement is required for students to apply for this award and nominations are due as soon as possible. To submit a nomination or for more information contact the Office of Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement at scholars@up.edu.

Students, Alumni Win Grants and Scholarships

smart studentsSeveral University of Portland alumni and students recently were awarded prestigious grants and scholarships from organizations across the world. The University provides opportunities for students to apply for and receive a wide variety of grants and scholarships that encourage further scholarship, cross-cultural learning, leadership, and community service. In addition to two Fulbright Scholarships won by a current UP student and an alumna in 2014, other notable awards include a Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship, an NCIIA/Epicenter Engineering University Innovation Fellows program recipient, a NIH Postbac training program recipient, and a National Science Foundation graduate school grant. The University previously announced Truman Scholarship recipient Sarah Donohoe, Congress-Bundestag Youth Exchange Scholarship winner Sarah Letendre, and NCIIA/Epicenter Engineering University Innovation Fellows program recipient Kevin Bastien.

Fulbright Scholarships were awarded to senior Cerice Keller, double major in English and German studies, and a 2009 alumna who has been selected to study in Ireland. Keller received an English teaching assistantship to Germany. Since 2001, students from University of Portland have earned 48 Fulbright grants. The University has been a leader among its peer institutions in producing Fulbright scholars for several years, ranking first nationally in 2012-13, 2011-12, 2010-11, 2007-08; second nationally in 2009-10, 2008-09, 2006-07; and third nationally 2013-14.

Clarie Couch, a senior biology major, has been accepted into a NIH Postbac Training Program. Couch’s project will involve genetic characterization and vaccine development for chlamydia. Couch will be working at Rocky Mountain Laboratories in Hamilton, Montana. Last year, Couch was a recipient of a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship.

James Gaynor, a senior chemistry major, has been awarded a National Science Foundation Graduate Student Grant. Gaynor will be attending the University of Washington in the fall. Last year, Gaynor was a recipient of a prestigious Goldwater Scholarship.

UP Student Sarah Donohoe Wins Truman Scholarship

Donohoe_Sarah_web copyUniversity of Portland student Sarah Donohoe has been awarded a prestigious Truman Scholarship from the Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation. Donohoe, a biology major, is from Juneau, Alaska. This is the second Truman Scholarship recipient from the University of Portland; the first was Geoffrey Painter in 2000.The Harry S. Truman Scholarship Foundation reviewed 655 applications from 294 institutions for this year’s scholarship. Students were selected based on their records of leadership, public service, and academic achievement.

Each  Truman Scholar receives up to $30,000 for graduate study. Scholars also receive priority admission and supplemental financial aid at some premier graduate institutions, leadership training, career and graduate school counseling, and special internship opportunities within the federal government. Recipients must be U.S. citizens, have outstanding leadership potential and communication skills, be in the top quarter of their class, and be committed to careers in government or the non-profit sector. There have been 2,906 Truman Scholars selected since the first awards were made in 1977.

Last year, Donohoe was also a recipient of an Ernest F. Hollings Scholarship offered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administra­tion (NOAA). This scholarship comes with funding for both junior and senior years as well as a summer internship. Recipients are students who have a background in marine science and who are planning to pursue a career in some aspect of marine science. Donohoe is the first University of Portland student to win a Hollings Scholarship.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
