Need Promotion Help? Ask SOPHIA

As part of the SOPHIA mission to support senior faculty development, a new program is being implemented to match faculty who are seeking promotion to professor or submitting files for post tenure review with faculty who have successfully gone through the promotion process and are willing to read and respond to promotion files, according to Terry Favero, biology. Faculty who are seeking promotion and would like to receive feedback on any aspect of the promotion dossier are asked to contact Favero at x7373 or favero@up.edu by October 23. please let us know. Senior faculty who are willing to volunteer and assist in this process are asked to contact Favero as well.

SOPHIA is a faculty engagement program, charged by the provost to explore and provide faculty development opportunities for senior-level faculty.

Congratulations to 2017 Faculty Award Winners

The University’s Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 9, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:

  • The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to Terry Favero, biology (pictured). Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
  • The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to Tisha Morrell, education.
  • The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Molly Hiro, English.
  • The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to Maximilian Schlosshauer, physics.
  • The inaugural Faculty Award for Outstanding Service, presented annually by the Committee on Committees to a faculty member “who engages in creative service work that transforms not only local communities but also those afar and acknowledges distinguished contributions that express the University’s commitment to responding to the needs of the world,” was presented to Alice Gates, sociology and social work.

Laura McLary Named Oregon Professor of the Year

mclary150Laura McLary, international languages and cultures, was named Oregon Professor of the Year by the national Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the international Council for the Advancement and Support of Education on Thursday, November 19.

The award committee cited McLary’s innovation and dedication to teaching international languages, highlighting her leadership in growth of the University’s German language program. Most of McLary’s students participate in the University’s study-abroad program in Salzburg, Austria, where she studied as an undergraduate student.

McLary has taught German at UP since 1999 and served as chair of the international languages and cultures department from 2004-07. Prior to coming to UP, she was a professor of German at the University of Mississippi in Oxford, Miss., for three years. She earned both a Ph.D. and master’s degree in German language and literature from University of Massachusetts Amherst. She earned a bachelor’s degree in German and international studies from Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Previous UP professors who have been recognized by the national organization include Kate Regan, who was named National Professor of the Year; Becky Houck, Terry Favero and Karen Eifler, who were all named Oregon Professor of the Year.

Graves Award in the Humanities for Alexandra Hill

hill copyAlexandra Hill, international languages and cultures, has been awarded an Arnold L. and Lois S. Graves Award in the Humanities. This competitive award, offered biennially, is “intended to encourage and to reward outstanding accomplishment in actual teaching in the humanities by younger faculty members.” The Graves Awards are administered by Pomona College under the auspices of the American Council of Learned Societies. The award recognizes excellence in teaching, and the funding that accompanies it is designed to help with research-related expenses. This award will help Hill begin a new project investigating the museumification of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) in the months leading up to the twenty-fifth anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, an experience that will support her course GRM 353, Remembering Divided Germany.

Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
