2020 Retiring Faculty Ceremony, April 15

The following faculty members have announced their retirement at the conclusion of the spring 2020 semester, according to Kathleen Staten, provost’s office:

  • Robert J. Albright, Professor of Electrical Engineering, 50 years
  • Robin D. Anderson, Dean of the Pamplin School of Business and Franz Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurship, 22 years.
  • James B. Carroll, Professor of Education, 27 years
  • Frances Simmons, Instructor, School Nursing, 31 years
  • Thomas G. Greene, Provost and Professor of Education, 37 years

A ceremony and reception for all 2020 retirees will take place on Wednesday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons board room. For more information contact Staten at x7105 or staten@up.edu.

Dean Robin Anderson Announces Retirement

February 28, 2020

Robin D. Anderson, dean of the Pamplin School of Business and Franz Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurship, has announced his retirement, effective June 30, 2020. Anderson has served the University of Portland with distinction since 1998 after a successful career in business, entrepreneurship, and education leadership. Joining UP as the Robert W. Franz Chair for Entrepreneurship, he created the University’s distinguished Entrepreneur Scholars Program. He also founded the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, which has received the NASDAQ Center of Excellence Award and continues to be recognized as a leading academic center.
Anderson was named dean of the Pamplin School in 2006, and he championed experiential learning, optimized the structure and organization of the School of Business, and strengthened the School’s ties with alumni and industry partners around the world.  He has expanded the School’s academic offering through the creation of new disciplines, specializations, and certificate programs. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy of professional achievement and personal devotion to UP.
Political science professor Gary Malecha will serve as Interim Dean of the Pamplin School of Business until a permanent successor is named. The University will commence a search for the new Pamplin Dean in the late summer or early fall.
Please wish Robin, his wife Jean, and his family a retirement filled with the satisfaction of a job well done.

Two Fine Young New Fellows

March 2, 2015

epicenter-logoUP students Taylor Hendricks and Cole Preece have completed training to join the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter) University Innovation Fellows, a national program that empowers student leaders to increase campus engagement with entrepreneurship, innovation, creativity, design thinking, and venture creation. They join 121 new Fellows in the current network, for a total number of 291 Fellows from 114 schools. Hendricks and Preece are supported by faculty sponsors Peter Rachor, Robin Anderson, and Sharon Jones to create new experiences for students at the University. They will join current UP Innovation Fellow Kevin Bastien.

Student Kevin Bastien Accepted for National Fellowship

bastienKevin Bastien, a junior computer science major and Entrepreneur Scholar, has been accepted to the prestigious NCIIA/Epicenter Engineering University Innovation Fellows program, according to Peter Rachor, Franz Center. His application was supported by Rachor, Tammy Vandegrift, Sharon Jones, and Robin Anderson.

Bastien’s fellowship is seen as an opportunity for UP to have a member of this national group on campus in support of entrepreneurship and innovation initiatives within the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation. It will also support increased focus on entrepreneurship, leadership, and innovation within the Pamplin School of Business, the Shiley School of Engineering, and campus-wide.

The University Innovation Fellows program is run by the National Center for Engineering Pathways to Innovation (Epicenter), a National Science Foundation-funded partnership between Stanford University and the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance (NCIIA). New Name, Expanded Mission

September 23, 2013

1aAnderson150Robert W. Franz Chair in Entrepreneurship and Executive Director Robin Anderson has announced the creation of the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneur­ship, and Innovation. The center, named for long-time benefactors Elsie Franz Finley and regent Robert W. Franz, is an expansion of the award-winning Center for Entrepreneurship. The center’s directors are Pete Rooks, director for leadership; Peter Rachor, director for entrepreneurship; and Eric Anctil, director for innovation.

The Leadership program will focus on the concepts of ethical leadership and inviting others to join together in addressing vital needs and goals within the program’s relationships and communities. The Entrepreneurship program combines experiential-learning opportunities with a values-based ­education that emphasizes integrity, opportunity recognition, risk-taking and hard work. The Innovation program will provide co-and extra-curricular experiences that equip students with the skills to make their ideas reality.
