Faculty & Staff Fitness Classes

January 11, 2019

All faculty and staff members are invited to check out fitness classes offered each day during the noon hour at the Beauchamp Center. Classes generally run from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m. in Studio 30. The schedule is as follows:

  • Mondays – Centering Yoga with Karen
  • Tuesdays – alternating each week – Sweaty 20 with Julee and Pilot Cycle with Becca
  • Wednesdays – Zumba with Brady
  • Thursdays – Invigorating Yoga with Kaitlin
  • Fridays – alternating each week – Rowing with Ryan and Conditioning/Flexibility with Emma

Beauchamp Center Fall Break Schedule

The Beauchamp Center will be on the following schedule over Fall Break, according to Brian Dezzani, recreation services:

  • Monday, Oct. 15 to Friday, Oct. 10: 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday, Oct. 20: 10 a.m.-2 p.m.
  • Sunday, Oct. 21: 10 a.m.-12 a.m.

Beauchamp Center Fitness Classes: Come One, Come All!

Faculty/staff fitness classes begin this week in the Beauchamp Center, according to Kaitlin Bourne, recreational services. Faculty/staff fitness classes will be offered each day of the week throughout the fall semester during the noon hour. Please check the online schedule for detailed class times and locations.

Please note: There will be no class on Friday, August 24. The full class schedule is as follows:

Monday – Centering Yoga with Karen

Tuesday – Sweaty 20 with Julee and Pilot Cycle with Becca (rotating Sweaty 20 starts 8/21, Cycle starts 8/28)

Wednesday – Invigorating Yoga with Kaitlin

Thursday – Zumba with Brady

Friday – Erg Spin Rowing with Ryan and Conditioning/Flexibility with Emma (rotating Erg Spin starts 8/31, Conditioning starts 9/7)

Pilot Kids Camps Are Here!

June 15, 2018

Pilot Kids Camp registrations are still being accepted by the recreational services office for all sessions. The ever-popular camps offer games, arts and crafts, sports, and tons of fun for kids who will be in grades 1-6 in fall 2018.  Camp runs 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. Forms and more information are available at this link. Pilot Kids Camp has special pricing for UP faculty, staff, and students as well.

Pilot Kids Camp Dates, Summer 2018:

  • June 18-22
  • June 25-29
  • July 9-13
  • July 16-20
  • Aug 6-10

Beauchamp Rec Center Easter Break Hours, Fun Fridays

The Beauchamp Center will be on the following schedule over Easter Break:

  • Thursday, March 29 – 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Friday, March 30 – Closed
  • Saturday, March 31 – 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Sunday, April 1t – Closed
  • Monday, April 2 – 6 a.m. – 12 a.m.

Faculty/Staff “Fun Fridays” for the remainder of the semester entail a rotating schedule of Erg Spin Rowing and Zumba:

  • Zumba dates: April 6 and 20
  • Erg Spin Rowing dates: April 13 and 27, May 4
  • Fun Friday classes are from 12:05 – 12:55 p.m. in Studio 45

UP Shamrock Run Team Meeting, Practice Run: March 13

The University of Portland’s Shamrock Run team will meet on Tuesday, March 13 for a team meet-up and practice run leaving from the Beauchamp Center at 5:15 p.m. The team will do a team run that is between 2-4 miles. New Family Climbing Wall Sessions Offered

January 19, 2018

The Outdoor Pursuits Program is pleased to be launching family climbing sessions at the Beauchamp Center climbing wall, according to Nathan Hingley, recreational services. The new sessions are open to all UP staff and faculty who would like to spend an hour climbing with family members.

The sessions will take place on Saturday afternoons from 3 to 4 p.m. on January 27, February 10 and February 24. More will be scheduled following spring break.

Outdoor pursuits will provide all necessary equipment appropriate to the ages required. Children may be belayed by staff or family members if they have completed the climbing wall orientation and belay check-off. Staff and faculty may climb if they have completed climbing wall orientation.

Shamrock Run On The Horizon: UP Team Wants You!

The Portland Shamrock Run is fast approaching, and the University of Portland team needs your help. Participants can sign up for any distance. To sign up, go to www.motivrunning.com/shamrock-run-portland/. Under the REGISTER tab, make sure to select TEAM EVENT (vs. individual). After filling in your information, go to the payment page to list your team name as: University of Portland.

As a UP team member, you will receive $4 off the registration fee through January 2018.

  • Wednesday, Nov. 22, 6 a.m.-6 p.m. (basketball courts unavailable)
  • Thursday-Friday, Nov. 24-25, Closed
  • Saturday, Nov. 26, 10 a.m.-2 p.m. (basketball courts unavailable)
  • Sunday, Nov. 27, 12 p.m.-midnight (basketball courts unavailable until evening)

Fall Finals & Holiday Break:

  • Thursday, Dec. 14, 6 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Friday, Dec. 15, 7 a.m.-7 p.m.
  • Saturday-Sunday, Dec. 16-17, Closed

Janet Banks, nursing, presented “Making it our Own: Innovatiove Course Writing Stages and Structures in a Concept-Based Curriculum Revision” (with Nicole Auxier), a poster presented at American Academy of Colleges of Nursing Baccalaureate Education Conference, Orlando, FL, November 2019.

Salvador Orara, Shiley School of Engineering, in his role as acting president AIGA Portland the professional organization for design, collaborated with the vice president of brand innovation at Nike to introduce “Impressions of Sport: 20 Years of Nike Communication Design” to the Portland design community at Swanson Studios in NW Portland on November 21, 2019. The one-night exhibition and presentation was open to members of AIGA and the community at large. As an education initiative, Salvador and his team worked with key faculty across different schools in the area including Pacific Northwest College of Art, Portland State University, George Fox, and UP to provide students with private access tours to view the exhibit.

Martin Cenek, Shiley School of Engineering, had his paper, “Semantic Network Analysis Pipeline: Interactive Text Mining Framework for Exploration of Semantic Flows in Large Corpus of Text,” (with student coauthors Rowan Bulkow, Levi Oyster, Boyd Ching, and Ashika Mulagada) published in MDPI Applied Science. DOI: https://doi.org/10.3390/app9245302.
