And The Winner Is…
The employee commute options survey recently completed by the University of Portland has been submitted to the DEQ, according to Gerald Gregg, public safety. Winners of the two $25 Fred Meyer gift cards offered to sweeten the deal are Brian Doyle, marketing and communications (pictured on his daily drive to campus), and Mathew Gerber, physical plant. Thanks go out to these and all employees who helped the University live up to its environmental responsibility to keep emissions as low as possible. For more information contact Gregg at 7161 or gregg@up.edu.
Emergency Response Training: Are You Ready for a Disaster?
The University of Portland Campus Community Emergency Response Team (CCERT) offers emergency response training for all faculty, staff, and students, according to Jeff Rook, public safety. Volunteers are trained by the University’s CCERT trainers and Portland Fire and Rescue to provide emergency disaster assistance on campus and in the immediate surrounding neighborhood. Public safety offers CCERT classes at no cost to people who live or work at the University of Portland. Participants attend a total of 24 hours of hands-on training. Classes are on Wednesdays, 4:30-7:30, starting January 29 in Buckley Center room 314. For more information and online registration clink on this link. For more information contact Rook at 7161 or rook@up.edu.
Fire Alarm Testing Schedule
As a part of ongoing efforts in fire safety and alarm monitoring, the public safety office will have a vendor on campus over the next 4 weeks conducting annual fire alarm testing. Below is the schedule for the buildings to be tested:
- Jan. 6: Bauccio Commons and Pilot House
- Jan. 7: Mehling Hall and Orrico Hall
- Jan. 8: Fields and Schoenfeldt Hall.
During this time there will be work crews testing each device in the assigned building, and there will be short audible tests conducted on the system. Staff are not required to leave during this time, but if for some reason the alarm is prolonged during this time period, please leave the building and organize outside the building until given the “all clear” to re-enter. For more information contact public safety at 7161 or publicsafety@up.edu.
Campus Alert Test, Nov. 5
The University of Portland is committed to comprehensive, real-time communication in the event of a campus emergency including natural disasters, weapons-bearing individuals, and other situations that pose an immediate threat to the security and safety of those on campus. UPAlert is an automated communication system that simultaneously sends voice, text, and e-mail messages to all students, faculty, and staff to notify them in the event of a campus emergency.
The public safety and information services departments are working collaboratively to test, analyze, and assess the capability of the mass notification infrastructure. To this end, we will conduct a campus-wide test of the UPAlert system on Wednesday, November 5, between noon and 1 p.m. Within a minute after the alert is issued, you should receive a voicemail, text message, and two e-mail messages—one e-mail to your UP account and the other to your personal account (e.g., Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.).
Your support and participation is absolutely critical to the success of this program. If you wish to participate in UPAlert or need to update your contact information, please follow the instructions below to enter your information into the UPAlert system:
- Log in to PilotsUP.
- Scroll down to “UP Alert Contact Info” located toward the bottom of the right-hand column.
- Click “Edit.”
- Enter an “Alternate Email (non-UP).”
- Enter a “Cell/Alternate Phone” number with no spaces, parentheses, or hyphens.
- Check the check box to indicate that you agree to the terms and conditions of the UP Alert program.
- If you would like to receive a text message as well, check the box that states, “I agree to receive text message notifications (optional).”
- Click on the ‘Update’ button.
Your contact information will not be shared or distributed and you will only receive a message alert if an extreme emergency affects the campus. For more information, please visit the UPAlert page at http://www.up.edu/upalert. For more information contact public safety at 7161 or publicsafety@up.edu.
Annual Security Report
On September 30, 2013, in compliance with the Campus Crime Reporting Act and the amended Higher Education Opportunity Act, the University of Portland’s Annual Security Report was published and made available to all members of the University community, and to prospective students and employees.
The report includes statistics for the previous three years concerning reported crimes that occurred on-campus, in certain off-campus buildings or property owned or controlled by the University of Portland, and on public property within, or immediately adjacent to and accessible from, the campus. The report also includes institutional policies concerning campus security, such as policies regarding sexual assault, emergency response, and other matters.
You can obtain a copy of the Annual Security and Fire Report by contacting public safety at 7161 or at http://tinyurl.com/ofnz8t3. For more information contact public safety at 7161 or publicsafety@up.edu.

UP Shuttle Program Changes
Due to budget reprioritizations from TriMet and the University of Portland, the UP Shuttle program will be discontinued as of June 30. Summer shuttle times will be suspended as of June 30 as the University ends its formal agreement with TriMet and Zipcar. TriMet will still have the no. 44 and no. 35 buses servicing the University of Portland campus throughout the day, which will give students, faculty, and staff access to the larger TriMet transit network.
The University will start a new shuttle service program in August to maximize the high ridership times experienced with the previous shuttle service. A newly purchased University minivan will serve as the UP Shuttle. The shuttle will be used during the peak times of need for students, staff, and faculty, but will not compete with the TriMet bus service times.
- The new shuttle service starting in August will operate during the academic year at the following times:
- Friday Evenings from 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. to the Interstate MAX station.
- Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. to the Interstate MAX station.
- Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. to Peninsula Fred Meyer and St. Johns.
- Additionally, during the months of August, September and October, the Saturday Shuttle will go to the St. John’s Farmers Market from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The shuttle will operate on the same time schedule as the existing shuttle, departing the Pilot House every 30 minutes when in service. New shuttle schedules will be posted prior to the start of the fall 2013 school year and will be available at public safety and the Pilot House. Contact public safety at 7161 or publicsafety@up.edu for more information.
Campus Security Tips
Public safety director Gerald Gregg and physical plant director André Hutchinson have asked campus personnel to keep a few tips in mind to improve overall campus security:
- Master keys should be kept inside a locked office or secure area and should never be taken home or removed from campus.
- University issued building keys should be kept on a generic key ring without any attachments identifying a UP connection.
- UP ID cards should never be clipped or attached to key rings.
- University issued building keys should never be swapped or transferred among faculty or staff, even within the same department.
- All keys are issued to specific individuals; any changes/transfers should be coordinated through the locksmith shop.
For more information contact public safety at 7161.
Student Driver Policy Changes
The public safety office has updated their policies for student drivers who operate University owned vehicles or privately owned vehicles on University sponsored activities or business, according to Gerald Gregg, public safety. Please advise all student drivers to check the policies in order to assure that they are in compliance.
A complete listing of University policies for student drivers is available on the web at http://tinyurl.com/atl4dgu. The list includes all policies for pre-trip preparation (trip itineraries, “final participants” list, safe driving course completion); driver requirements (valid driver’s license, good driving record/authorization); safety criteria and use restrictions (seatbelt use, no texting or cell phone use, observation of speed limits and other laws, time restrictions, etc.); and reporting of accidents or damage.
The next student driver safety training course will be on Monday, February 25, at 12:30 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 319. Courses last approximately one hour.
The proper utilization of University-owned vehicles and the safe operation of privately owned vehicles on University sponsored activities or business can save lives, prevent injuries, minimize University transportation costs, and reduce liability. For more information contact public safety at 7161.
