Men’s Soccer Home Games

1a1mensoccerThe Pilots men’s soccer team returns to friendly confines this week when they take to Merlo Field for two home WCC games. The action kicks off on Friday when Saint Mary’s comes to Merlo Field for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Then, please make plans to join us in giving the seniors on the team a lively send-off as they go up against San Francisco on Senior Day, November 17 at 1 p.m. For tickets call 7535, and for more information go to www.portlandpilots.com.

_1aMensSoccerThe Pilots men’s soccer and volleyball teams return to action at home this week. The men’s soccer team kicks off the WCC action on Friday when they play San Diego at 7 p.m. Then the volleyball team will bring WCC action to the Chiles Center on Saturday, as they play Gonzaga at 1 p.m. The weekend is topped off when the men’s soccer team heads out to Merlo Field to play Loyola Marymount at 1 p.m. on Sunday. UP Day at Merlo Field

1a1mensoccer150The athletics department will offer its first UP Day for a soccer game on Thursday, September 19, at the Pilot men’s game against Oregon State at 6 p.m. Much like UP Day at Etzel Field, the soccer event will feature free tickets for all staff and faculty and immediate family. Counting Down for UP Soccer Season

soccer2013The 2013 men’s and women’s soccer season kicks off in less than two months when the women take to Merlo Field against Marquette on Friday, August 23 at 7 p.m. There are going to be some fun promotional events this year surrounding this game including the annual Bite on the Bluff before the game and post-game fireworks. There will also be the 25 year reunion of the first men’s final four soccer team on the 15th of September, and a Movie Night sponsored by Safeway on the baseball field following the games on September 27th. Reserve your season tickets now to see all 25 home games. General admission season tickets start at just $88, new season tickets only. All University of Portland faculty and staff can receive 50 percent off their season ticket purchase by visiting the box office and presenting a valid UP ID card.  For more information or to order your season tickets, please call (503) 943-7525.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
