The next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be Friday, April 1, from 3:30-5 p.m., in the Murphy Room in Franz Hall. The group will be discussing an excerpt from Kathleen Norris’ Quotidian Mysteries: Laundry, Liturgy and “Women’s Work.” The reading can be found on the FIDLG website. The next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be Friday, January 29, at 3:30 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy Conference Room. The group will discuss a chapter from William Deresiewicz’s book Excellent Sheep entitled “Great Books,” an excerpt from Gunartana’s Mindfulness in Plain English, and a reflection by Thicht Nhat Hanh entitled “Washing Dishes” (from his book Miracle of Mindfulness). The next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be Friday November 6, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in the Murphy Conference Room in Franz Hall. The group will be discussing Oliver Sack’s essay “Sabbath,” a short excerpt from Pope Francis’s encyclical on the environment, Laudato Si’, titled “The Need to Protect Employment,” and a poem by Raymond Carver, “Loafing.” All readings may be found on the Faith and Intellectual Life website at https://sites.up.edu/garaventa/fildg/. Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group, Sept. 25

gardenThe Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will have its first meeting of the year on Friday, Sept. 25 from 3:30 – 5 p.m. in the Murphy Room. We will discuss a chapter from Chris Lowney’s Heroic Leadership: Best Practices from a 450-Year-Old Company that Changed the World and Tim Kreider’s 2012 New York Times Op-ed piece, “The ‘Busy’ Trap.” All faculty and staff are welcome. Refreshments will be served.

2015 Faculty Awards

staff & faculty portraitsThe University’s 2015 Faculty Awards were presented on Tuesday, May 5, at the Faculty Awards Dinner, with the following results:

  • The James Culligan Award, established in 1953 in memory of a dedicated servant of the University and presented annually to a faculty member in recognition of distinguished service, was presented to Norah Martin, philosophy. She was noted as “a wonderful teacher, a creative and wide-ranging scholar, a consummate voice for reason and judgement in every imaginable area, a model of selfless service,” and much more. Winners of the Culligan Award wear the medal with their academic regalia, as a sign of the University’s highest faculty honor.
  • The Deans’ Award for Faculty Leadership, presented annually to a tenured faculty member who exemplifies, in an extraordinary way, the qualities of teaching and scholarship described in the University’s Articles of Administration for appointment, advancement in rank, and tenure, was presented to Ellen Lippman, Pamplin School of Business.
  • The Outstanding Teaching Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who is a particular exemplar of the University’s commitment to superb teaching, was presented to Mark Pitzer, psychological sciences.
  • The Outstanding Scholarship Award, presented annually by the University’s Committee on Teaching and Scholarship to a faculty member who presents unusually significant and meritorious achievement in professional scholarship during the past two academic years, and whose work substantively enhances the effectiveness of his or her classroom teaching, was presented to Martin Monto, sociology and social work.

UP Graduates in the Global Community

hThe Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) Executive Committee invites faculty and staff to attend listening sessions to give their thoughts and input into potential global learning outcomes which have been drafted by a CISGO subcommittee. The sessions will take place on Tuesday, March 17, from 4 to 5 p.m., in Franz Hall room 111, and Wednesday, March 18, from 10:15 to 11:15 a.m., in Franz 111. A listening session for students will take place on Thursday, March 19, from 7 to 8 p.m., with free pizza served.

FongBobbyThe next meeting of the Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group will be Friday, February 6, from 3:30 to 5 p.m., in Franz Hall Murphy conference room. The group will discuss “Cultivating ‘Sparks of Divinity:’ Soul-Making as Purpose of Higher Education” by late Ursinus College president Bobby Fong. In the context of this reading, the group will discuss answers to the question, “What was the most significant book you read as an undergraduate?” All faculty and staff are welcome, and refreshments will be served.

Free Screening of “Welcome To Unity,” Nov. 13

staff & faculty portraitsThe McNerney-Hanson Chair in Ethics will host a screening of the award-winning documentary, “Welcome to Unity,” on Thursday, November 13, at 6:15 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. The screening is free and open to all.

“Welcome to Unity” is a story filmed by a group of exchange students and local American teens. The exchange students sink their teeth into rural Oregon, while becoming the stars of their high school football team, and simultaneously learn to live the ‘American Way’. It is described as “a coming of age documentary that embarks on a journey of friendship, learning, understanding, and tolerance. As a group of people become a global family, they beat the odds in transcending cultural boundaries, and moving past stereotypes.” The film won best documentary in two different categories at the Chicago Film Festival.

Faith and Intellectual Life Discussion Group, April 4

The group will be discussing Antonio Spadaro’s “Interview with Pope Frances: A Big Heart Open to God” and the Rothko paining “Orange Red Orange,” which accompanies this announcement.
