Submit Butine Proposals

FrederkingDec2The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship cordially invites all regular faculty to submit proposals to receive funding from the Arthur Butine Faculty Development Fund. Faculty can download Butine application materials, review selection criteria, and consult the timeline for applications by visiting https://www.up.edu/academicsenate/tas/. Applications are due to the chair of the Committee on Teaching and Scholarship (Lauretta Frederking, political science), and the applicants’ respective department chairs (if CAS) and deans no later than noon on Friday, October 3, 2014. Please note also that applicants must discuss their Butine proposals with their respective deans prior to submitting applications for consideration.

The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship will host two workshops to review the Butine application process: Monday, September 8, 9 to 10 a.m., and Monday, September 8, 3 to 4 p.m., both in the Clark Library Conference Room.

A final reminder: All interim or completed project reports of previously funded proposals are due to the chair of Teaching and Scholarship as well as the appropriate dean no later than Friday, September 26. Report forms can be downloaded from the website listed above.

2013-2014 Butine Recipients

FrederkingMarch10The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship (TAS) has determined the award recipients of the 2013-2014 Butine Faculty Development Fund spring cycle, according to committee chair Lauretta Frederking, political science. Due to the large number of proposals received and the limited amount of funds available ($17,730), the committee was unable to fund all qualified proposals. This spring’s Butine Award recipients are:

Tulungan: Pilots for the Philippines, March 23-29

TulunganThe University’s Presidential Ad Hoc Committee on the Philippines will present Tulungan: Pilots for the Philippines, from Sunday, March 23 to Saturday, March 29. The week’s activities are meant to support and raise awareness about the Philippines as we extend our heads, our hearts, and our hands to recovery after Typhoon Haiyan. Activities will include:

Sunday, March 23: Mass for the third Sunday of Lent, with special prayers for the Philippines, 10:30 a.m., Chapel of Christ the Teacher. After-Mass Social outside of the Chapel, with coffee and donuts hosted by Campus Ministry.

Monday, March 24: Filipino film The Debut about struggling to be true to your culture, family, and beliefs, 7:15-9 p.m., Holy Cross Lounge (Franz Hall third floor). Free and open to the public. Refreshments and film raffle and hosted by the Garaventa Center.

Tuesday, March 25: Panel: “Disastrous Conse­quen­ces: Ecology, Economics and Relief after Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines,” 6-8 p.m., Buckley Center room 163. Panel includes Krista Kennedy, international student services, as moderator; Kenneth Crebillo, Ted Eckmann, Patricia Cox, nursing, and Valerie Francisco. Free and open to the public. Refreshments and cookies hosted by the Social Justice Program.

Friday, March 28: Pilots after Dark: Pilots for the Philippines, 10-11:30 p.m., The Cove. Join your friends to relax and enjoy good food and fun times.

Saturday, March 29: Molly Hightower Senior Service Day, 9 a.m., St. Mary’s Student Center lounge. UP seniors will organize collected medical supplies to be distributed as part of ongoing relief efforts in the Philippines. All proceeds go to NAFCON (National Alliance for Filipino Concerns).

Saturday, March 29: Asian-inspired Chef’s Table at the Bauccio Commons, 7 p.m. Bon Appetit general manager Kirk Mustain and his chefs select a scrumptious menu and prepare 8-10 mini plate courses, accompanied with wine pairings. Enjoy a view of behind-the-scenes food preparation while being pampered by culinary masterpieces. Tickets are $75 each. All proceeds go to Catholic Relief Services to support relief from Typhoon Haiyan. Seats are extremely limited. Teaching & Scholarship Faculty Award Winner Presentations, March 4

kolmesbutkusThe Teaching and Scholarship Committee invites all faculty and staff to presentations offered by the University’s 2013 teaching and scholarship faculty award winners. Lars Larson, winner of the Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching, will present “Dialectical Teaching in a Righteous Age,” and Russ Butkus and Steve Kolmes (pictured), winners of the Faculty Award for Excellence in Scholarship, will present “Children in Jeopardy: Anthropogenic Toxins and Childhood Exposure.” The presentations will take place on Tuesday, March 4, at 4:30 p.m., in Buckley Center room 163. Spring Butine Proposals Due by Feb. 7

FrederkingJan20The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship cordially invites all regular faculty to submit proposals to receive funding from the Arthur Butine Faculty Development Fund. Faculty can download Butine application materials and review selection criteria by visiting https://www.up.edu/academic-senate/tas/. Applications are due to 1) the Chair of the Committee on Teaching and Scholarship, Lauretta Frederking (by e-mail to tas@up.edu); 2) the applications’ respective department chairs (if CAS); and 3) the applicants’ deans no later than noon on Friday, February 7, 2014. Please note also that applicants must discuss their Butine proposals with their respective deans prior to submitting applications for consideration. It is imperative that the proposals must be fully completed, otherwise they will be automatically disqualified from consideration.

The awards are an opportunity for the University community to celebrate publicly two of its own for outstanding achievements in teaching and scholarship. Faculty Development Proposals

The Committee on Teaching and Scholarship is soliciting proposals from faculty and staff to host workshops, roundtables, and presentations during Faculty Development Day, to be held on Tuesday, May 7, according to Aziz Inan, committee chair. Proposals related in some way to the promotion of teaching, scholarship, or professional development are encouraged. Please contact Inan at 7429 or ainan@up.edu or any other member of the committee with proposals, questions, or requests for additional information.
