Faculty & Staff Giving Campaign Wraps Up Friday, Dec. 11

December 4, 2015

eaton copyNovember 4 marked the beginning of UP’s annual Faculty and Staff Giving Campaign, running to Friday, December 11. During this time, the development office asks employees to make their annual gifts and pledge their support to the University. Last year, over 300 employees raised $148,000 for student scholarships, building projects like the Beauchamp Recreation and Wellness Center, athletics, and various programs such as Entrepreneur Scholars, fine arts, and the Moreau Center.

Faculty and Staff donations are among the most important gifts to UP. They send a powerful message to students, alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of the University: that those closest to UP support its mission financially as well as professionally.

For more information and to make your gift today, go to www.up.edu/giving/facultystaff or contact Amy Eaton, development, at eatona@up.edu or 8551.

$100,000 Becic Gift Funds New Professorship

July 24, 2015

franzhallThe University has received a $100,000 gift from alumnus John Becic, who graduated in 1952 with a degree in accounting. With his gift, the University has established the John Becic Distinguished Professorship in Accounting within the Pamplin School of Business. Accounting professor Ellen Lippman has been appointed the inaugural holder of the new professorship. In addition, a portion of his gift will provide support for recent and future upgrades of Joe Etzel Field and the University’s baseball program.

Becic has been a strong supporter of the University and its athletic programs, especially baseball. While a student of the University, he was a pitcher for the Pilots baseball team. He had a career in accounting mostly in the Medford area. John and his wife Inez have four daughters and 13 grandchildren and currently live in the Portland area.

The Becic professorship will provide for such activities as a weekly accounting mentoring forum and a professional speaker series to develop awareness of career opportunities and create relationships among students, alumni, and local management professionals. Other plans call for a comprehensive leadership development program offered by the Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation.

$75,000 Cebula Family Gift

July 2, 2015

CebulaLeonard_204823 copyThe University has received a $75,000 gift from Elizabeth Cebula, whose family has long and supportive ties to UP. Cebula’s gift will help fund the Entrepreneur Scholars Program and the Pamplin School of Business Dean’s Leadership Initiative.

Elizabeth Cebula was married to the late Leonard Cebula ’53, ’75, a 1949 graduate of Columbia Prep (pictured) who earned a business degree from the University. All four of the Cebulas’ children are UP graduates: Mike ’80 (business degree) Philip ’81 (business), Eileen Cebula Smith ’82 (communications management), and John ’86 (accounting). Elizabeth and Leonard have two grandsons with UP connections: Daniel ’13 graduated in civil engineering, and Ryan, currently a senior majoring in mechanical engineering and minoring in business. In addition, Leonard’s late brother Paul ’60 was a UP graduate in engineering.

Entrepreneur Scholars are a competitively selected group of University of Portland undergraduate students from all majors who create new business ventures and social enterprises, as well as implement innovative products and delivery models for these organizations.

The Dean’s Leadership Initiative offers new leadership development opportunities for graduate business students, particularly those pursuing an MBA for non-profit management or a traditional MBA. The Initiative also provides support for undergraduate business majors who are completing the Leader Certificate Program through the Franz Center. It also supports leadership development for officers and aspiring officers in the student clubs in the Pamplin School of Business.

ebersol150The development office has announced a $100,000 gift from NBC television executive Dick Ebersol (pictured) to help fund the Beauchamp Recreation & Wellness Center, currently under construction and named in recognition of President Emeritus Rev. E. William Beauchamp, C.S.C. The Beauchamp Center, with an estimated cost of $23.7 million, is near completion and will be open to students and the campus community this fall.
