#GivingTuesday, Dec. 3: Together We Can Shine!

November 27, 2019

This Tuesday, December 3 is #GivingTuesday, a day of global generosity when millions of people around the world give in support of the causes that matter most to them. On the UP campus, we will celebrate the generosity of the donors who have supported our mission of teaching and learning, faith and formation, service and learning.

We get to see philanthropy in action every day at UP, whether it be while teaching students in the newest building on campus, Dundon-Berchtold Hall, cheering on our Portland Pilots cross country teams from the Pilot House, or by enjoying a reflective moment in the Marian Garden. Our experiences and ability to make a difference in the world around us through teaching, research, and service have been enhanced by the thousands of donors who support UP and our mission each year.

This #GivingTuesday, one special family has challenged the UP community to come together and secure gifts from 1,000 donors. When we do, we will unlock $100,000 in funding for student scholarships.

Make your gift online here (giving.up.edu/givingtuesday) or consider inviting others who believe in UP’s mission. Donors can give to any area of campus that matters most to them, and every donor counts toward the 1,000 donor goal, no matter the amount.

Other ways you can help us celebrate #GivingTuesday this year:

  • Go to giving.up.edu/givingtuesday to get your social media toolkit and tips on sharing about #GivingTuesday at UP
  •  Stop by Clark Library to write a note of thanks for UP donors and get a free hot chocolate
  •  Encourage a student you know to enter the #GivingTuesday essay contest here.

Thank you for celebrating #GivingTuesday and the generosity of UP donors. When the UP community comes together, it is amazing what we can achieve.

Faculty and Staff Giving: Sending A Powerful Message

November 27, 2019

Each year some 8,000 donors — including more than 300 staff and faculty members — give financially to support UP students and programs. Gifts from faculty and staff, totaling more than $100,000 annually, send a powerful message to alumni, businesses, foundations, and friends of the University, that those closest to UP believe in this community and choose to support it beyond giving of their time and talent.

When you give to UP, you can designate your gift to an area that you are passionate about, including scholarships, a particular school or program, Campus Ministry, athletics programs, and more.

One of the easiest ways to give is through a payroll deduction. To sign up for or renew a payroll deduction gift, please use this link. For more information about giving opportunities, visit the Giving UP page here.

New Grants & Gifts for UP

February 8, 2019

The development office reports that UP recently received a $700,000 grant from the E.L. Wiegand Foundation to create the E.L. Wiegand Environmental Laboratory, which will be a part of the Franz Campus Boat House.

The University also secured a commitment in the amount of $500,000 to the recreation fields on the Franz Campus. This grant is made possible through Monica Names King, Class of 1990, from the Tom & Meg Names Family Foundation.

And, in honor of the one and only Jim Kuffner, former HR director and longtime UP neighborhood liaison, the Kuffner family recently made a $250,000 donation. $175,000 will go to the James J. Kuffner MBA ’88 Franz Campus Beautification Fund, since Jim played a key role in helping to secure the 35 acres that created the Franz Campus; and $75,000 will go to the Kathleen E. Kuffner MEd ’88 Chapel Choir Fund.

Giving Tuesday Instagram Winners Give Back

December 7, 2018

As part of this year’s Giving Tuesday event, UP students had the chance to enter an Instagram contest where they could be one of three people to win $250 to donate to any area of UP they want. The three winners were randomly selected and shared with development which campus funds they are giving back to:

  • Senior Chloe Tanega will be donating her $250 to UP’s Filipino American Student Association (FASA). Chloe is also the president of FASA and plans to use the funds for their 5th annual culture show this spring. “We want to make this year the biggest one yet,” said Tanega. Chloe also remarked, “Giving Tuesday comes at a good time after everyone is done shopping. “
  • This year was freshman Angelica Garcia’s first year participating in Giving Tuesday and she believes it’s important because “in this society, we are taught to take and take and it makes a big impact on people when we give back.” Garcia is donating her winnings to UP’s Mock Trial team because it has made a huge difference in her time at UP.
  • Senior Ruby Beauchamp believes Giving Tuesday is important because “it is a way to support the community, especially here at UP. Giving Tuesday is great because $250 doesn’t sound like that much, but because I am a part of multiple clubs I know that their budgets are very small so the extra $250 makes a huge difference.” Ruby’s winnings will be going to UP’s College Ecology Club as she is the current president and is most passionate about environmental issues and raising awareness about sustainability.

For more information on Giving Tuesday contact Marie Jobes, development, at jobes@up.edu.

2018-19 Ignite Grants: Deadline Coming Up

November 30, 2018

There is still time to apply for the 2018-19 round of Ignite Grants for Faculty Innovation in Teaching and Learning, as proposals are due on January 18, 2019.

Ignite Grants, which range up to $5,000, are designed to encourage faculty to explore new ideas that have the potential to reshape the classroom experience and to create new opportunities to tie curriculum to real-world experiences in both undergraduate and graduate programs. Ideas that engage students as collaborators in project development and implementation phases are especially encouraged. Proposals should complement Vision 2020 and support individual school strategies and priorities. Ideas are encouraged from all corners of campus.

Any current, full-time faculty who have the support of their associate dean or department chair may apply. Faculty are encouraged to collaborate with students, staff, departmental and cross-campus faculty colleagues, and co-curricular centers to create teams that will enhance learning and project impact. Additional team members do not have to be full-time.

For more information and to submit a proposal, please see the Ignite Grants on the Teaching and Learning Hub web site. Please feel free to contact the Ignite team at ignite@up.edu.

#UPGives Campaign: Every Gift Matters on Tuesday, Nov. 27

November 23, 2018

Giving Tuesday, a global day of philanthropy, is coming on November 27, and the University of Portland will take part through the #UPGives Campaign, according to Marie Jobes, development. The UP Giving Tuesday website allows people to donate to any fund of their choice, including colleges, schools, clubs, centers, teams, scholarships, and more.

This year three UP families have stepped up to inspire more support for student programs, scholarships, and service learning. They’re challenging the Pilot community to make at least 400 gifts between now and November 27 to unlock $40,000. No matter the size, every donation counts towards reaching the 400 gift goal.

Make a gift today or find out more here.

To be a Giving Tuesday ambassador and promote a UP fund that you love, be sure to look at UP’s Giving Tuesday Social Media Toolkit. It includes content, images, and dates to post, tweet, gram, and share updates about Giving Tuesday to your social network.

Thank you for joining in the effort to give back and help our Pilots go forward! Please contact jobes@up.edu with any questions.
