David Houglum

David Houglum named director for leadership of the Franz Center

houglumNew-copyDavid Houglum was named the director for leadership in the Franz Center. He was actively involved in the Franz Center programs while serving as the Director of the Moreau Center, which will make for a seamless transition.

Houglum came to the University as interim director of the Moreau Center in 2013 and was named director the following year.

Houglum has a Ph.D. in leadership studies and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and received an undergraduate degree from Pacific Lutheran University. He has previously served as associate director of Student Leadership and Development and director of the Ignatian Leadership Institute at Loyola Marymount University. He has also served as both adjunct professor and faculty capacities at Gonzaga University and Loyola Marymount University.

Faculty and Staff Invited to Apply Now

University of Portland - service dayFaculty and staff are invited to apply for a 2014-2015 service learning accompanier position by Friday, April 11, using the online application found at http://tinyurl.com/kcklz7q. Any UP faculty or staff member who has a commitment to service, a desire to encourage student formation, and a willingness to live simply while immersed in an extended experience with students is welcome to apply; no experience is required.

Serving learning immersions offered next year include: Food Justice and Rural Immersions (Fall Break), Urban Immersion (Winter Break), Border and Habitat for Humanity Collegiate Challenge Immersion (Spring Break), and Nicaragua Immersion (3 weeks in May).

David Houglum Appointed as Director of Moreau Center

houglumDavid Houglum has been appointed as director of the University of Portland Moreau Center for Service and Leadership, according to Rev. Gerard Olinger, C.S.C, vice president for student affairs. Houglum, who has extensive experience in service learning, has been serving in this role in an interim capacity since September 2013.

Houglum has a Ph.D. in leadership studies and a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Gonzaga University and received an undergraduate degree from Pacific Lutheran University. He has previously served as associate director of Student Leadership and Development and director of the Ignatian Leadership Institute at Loyola Marymount University. He has also served as both adjunct professor and faculty capacities at Gonzaga University and Loyola Marymount University.

The Moreau Center offers students opportunities to serve local, domestic, and international communities while developing the skills, knowledge, and habits to improve the world through hope, compassion and solidarity. Popular Moreau Center programs include the Nicaragua Immersion, Collegiate Challenge, and the Rural Plunge.
