The Dundon-Berchtold Institute has created a platform for sharing time capsules of personal moments and experiences that continue to linger from 2020. “These Glimpses of 2020 [including one shared by Bill Reed] are not intended to be grand arcs of storytelling from the whole year, nor framed as thorough reflections in which contributors now have a full understanding and meaning of the moments,” says Dan McGinty, director of the Dundon-Berchtold Institute. “Rather, we have heard from some members of our community that they are still holding some raw experiences and thoughts in mind.” Contact McGinty at mcgintyd@up.edu for more information.

New University Events Director: Joe Kaleel
Thank You Bill Reed!!
We are proud of our graduates and enriched as a family with every commencement weekend, and would like to remind everyone that the bows and ribbons, programs and schedules, the details both large and small for the big show, are expertly managed by the UP events staff, who work behind the scenes to insure a successful and memorable University of Portland commencement weekend. This year marks Bill Reed’s 28th and final commencement (29th counting his own graduation 1972). Bill is retiring this summer as director of university events, hard as that is to believe. The University Museum and Archives gives thanks and appreciation to Bill in the latest post on the Museum and Archives blog.
As a complement to the blog entry, the Museum also has a photograph and article display about Bill in the display case on the first floor of Buckley Center near the studies abroad office. Contact Carolyn Connolly, museum coordinator, at x8038 or piatz@up.edu for more information.
A FIRST For Engineering
On Saturday, January 4, the Shiley School of Engineering hosted the FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Robotics Kickoff regional event in the Chiles Center. More than 800 high school students and teachers from Oregon and Southern Washington came to UP for the nationwide NASA telecast of the kickoff for this year’s competition. Moderators and volunteers for the event came from throughout the local technology industry. Engineering professor Debbie Munro participated in the formal program (as did engineering student Natalie Janson) and described the benefits of a UP engineering education. Students and teachers were also given tours of Shiley Hall.
Engineering dean Sharon Jones extends her thanks to all who made the event a resounding success, including engineering technician supervisor Allen Hansen and his staff, Bill Reed and the events staff, Dan Sandaal with information services, and athletics director Scott Leykam, who coordinated events in such as way as to allow the use of the Chiles Center during basketball season.
