Workplace Sexual Harassment: “What Now in a #metoo World?,” Feb. 7

The Career Center and the Shiley School of Engineering are sponsoring “What Now in a #metoo World? How to Recognize and Respond to Workplace Harassment” on Wednesday, February 7, from 7-8:30 p.m., in Buckley Center Auditorium. Bill Jenkins, director of employee relations and staff diversity, and three professionals will talk about how to recognize workplace harassment, your legal rights, and how to respond. This program is open to the UP community; students, faculty, staff, and alumni are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Also, the Career Center and the Shepard Academic Resource Center are hosting “Destination: Declared,” a four-week workshop series designed to help students in their decision to declare a major. The series is on Tuesdays from 4:15–5:15 p.m., beginning Tuesday, February 13. Students must apply by Friday, February 9.

Third Friday Supervisor Workshops, Session 3: June 17

jenkinsbill copyEvery third Friday of the month, human resources director Sandy Chung and assistant director Bill Jenkins will hold workshops for supervisors from 10-11 a.m. in the Waldschmidt fifth floor conference room. The Third Friday Workshop scheduled for June 17 is about performance management, including how to give constructive feedback, do verbal and written warnings, and conduct performance improvement plans.

Third Friday Supervisor Workshops, Session 2: May 20

The second Third Friday Workshop, scheduled for May 20, is about best practices related to the recruitment process, including interviewing and making job offers.

Harassment and Discrimination Policy Reminder

please_noteThe human resources office would like to remind the University of Portland community to review and be knowledgeable about the University’s Harassment-Free Work Environment Policy and the collective responsibility to promote and ensure a campus environment that is free from harassment and discrimination. The policy covers all faculty, staff (including student workers), and students. The policy is available at this link. There is also a link on that page to the Student Handbook, which provides additional information for students.

Please contact Bill Jenkins, human resources, at x8784, or anyone else in HR if you have concerns about unlawful harassment or discrimination. This is also a reminder to managers and supervisors to immediately contact HR whenever an employee brings concerns about unlawful harassment or discrimination to your attention, no matter how big or small the concern may be.

New Third Friday Supervisor Workshops

The workshops will take place from 10-11 a.m. in the Waldschmidt fifth floor conference room. The first Third Friday Workshop, scheduled for April 22 at 10 a.m., is about performance management and annual evaluations. HR will provide information about how to provide constructive feedback to employees, how to conduct annual performance evaluations, and how to conduct performance improvement plans.

New Title IX Coordinator Appointed

August 28, 2015

FrederkingDec2Lauretta Frederking, acting assistant provost and professor of political science, has been appointed as the University’s new Title IX coordinator. Frederking will work with Fr. John Donato, C.S.C., in his capacity as deputy Title IX coordinator for students; Matt Baasten, associate provost, in his position as deputy Title IX coordinator for faculty, and Bill Jenkins, human resources, as deputy Title IX coordinator for staff. Bryn Sopko, departing associate vice president for human resources, will complete all Title IX cases currently open and Frederking will assume responsibility for all new cases effective immediately.
