Delving Into The Camino de Santiago, Nov. 21

The University of Portland will host Lea Graham for her workshop, “Delving into the Camino de Santiago,” at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Novenber 21. in Buckley Center Room 163. The workshop is free and open to the public and is sponsored by the Garaventa Center, the English department, and the international languages and cultures department. RSVPs are encouraged to powell@up.edu.

Graham, an assistant professor of English at Marist College, is an avid fan of Camino de Santiago and shares her passion with student groups that she leads on the 500-mile pilgrim path stretching across Spain to the city of Santiago de Compostela. Graham is the author of the poetry book, Hough & Helix & Where & Here & You, You, You (2011) and of the chapbook Calendar Girls (2006.) Her poems, essays, translations, and reviews have been published in journals such as Notre Dame Review, Delirious Hem, Southern Humanities Review, and Fifth Wednesday. She is a contributing editor for Atticus Review and teaches subjects such as poetry and travel writing at Marist College. Valerie Peterson, mathematics, presented at the American Mathematical Society’s Western Sectional meeting, held at Portland State University the weekend of April 14-15. Her talk, “The REFLECT Project: Spreading Evidence-Based Practices in STEM,” described ongoing NSF-sponsored work with Stephanie Salomone, mathematics; Eric Anctil, education; Heather Dillon, engineering; Carolyn James, mathematics; and Tara Prestholdt, biology, that aims to support faculty who are adopting student-centered teaching practices.
Rachel Wheeler, theology, presented “Hidden Kindness: Strategies of Spiritual Care and Communication in the Christian Desert” at the American Academy of Religion Western Region Conference, Berkeley, Calif., March 24, 2018. She also presented “Rival Functions of Motherhood in the Christian Desert Tradition” for the Northwest Early Christian Studies Seminar in Portland, Ore., April 14, 2018.
Simon Aihiokhai, theology, served as an external reviewer of doctoral dissertation defense for “Muslim-Christian Dialogue of Life via Hospitality: A Theology of Abrahamic Asymmetric-Mutual Substitutive Responsibility Applied in An African Context” by Rev. Levi Nkwocha, University of Notre Dame, South Bend, Indiana. Defense Date: Thursday, March 15, 2018.

Chris Foss, history, presented a paper, “Hawks or Doves? A Short Political History of National Defense in the Pacific Northwest,” at the Pacific Northwest Historians’ Guild Conference, Seattle, Wash., March 3, 2018.

Hannah Highlander, mathematics, co-organized and co-chaired a special session on “Biomathematics: Progress and Future Directions” for the American Mathematical Society’s Western Sectional Meeting held at Portland State University. Co-organizers were Peter Hinow at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee and Deena Schmidt at the University of Nevada Reno. Two invited speakers were UP alumni: Hannah Biegel ’14, who presented “Incorporating data assimilation methods in a simple model for influenza,” and Mikahl Banwarth-Kuhn ’12, who presented “Coupled experimental and computational study of the interplay of mechanical properties and chemical signaling in patterns of stem cell division and differentiation in plants.”

Lorretta Krautscheid, nursing, published “Using multimedia resources to enhance learning during office hours” (with student coauthor Samuel Williams) in Journal of Nursing Education, 57 (4), 256. doi.org/10.3928/01484834-20180322-14 (April 2018).

Lisa Reed, business, presented “Fired for Being ‘Un-Googley’: Two Recently Filed Cases Will Test the Limits of an Employer’s Anti-Harassment Duties and Employees’ Political Speech Rights,” with Barbara Bloom-Groshong, in April 2018.
