Five Months in 1945: New Museum Blog Post
In the century plus since our founding, the University has seen a lot, and been through a lot of ups and downs. Triumphs (yeah, like this year’s women’s basketball WCC championship!!!) as well as times of scarcity and disruption have marked our journey from then to now. Working from the archives in the deep basements of The Bluff, we have had a chance to look back and perchance reflect. Today’s offering from the University Archives and Museum uses the pages of The Beacon to look at a five-month period in 1945. Follow this link to our blog post and, as Dr. Jim Covert liked to say, “Keep your chins up!”
In Memory: Rowena Bramlette, 1966-2020
The University remembers Rowena Bramlette, former associate vice president of budgeting and member of the UP class of 1988, who passed away on January 23, 2020. To celebrate the life of our friend and colleague, the University Museum has a photo display of Rowena in the Buckley Center first floor display case next to the Diversity Center (BC 102). All are welcome to stop by the display and remember Rowena.

Covert Gallery: “Running Through Time: Track and Field at the University of Portland”
The University’s Track and Field program has been in existence for over a century and known for its excellence. Early on, the program established the Northwest Invitational Track Meet as a signature annual event. The modern program continued to gain distinction under former coach Mike Johnson and current coach Rob Conner. We invite you to visit this exhibit featuring historic photographs, trophies, medals, and a pair of early track shoes replete with spikes. The exhibit will be on display in the Covert Gallery on the Clark Library’s main floor through March.
A Taste of UP for Friends, Families, Founders
From early years—when Archbishop Alexander Christie would come to campus to celebrate his Name Day, i.e., later becoming Founder’s Day—UP has been privileged to share the life and wonders of its campus with friends and families. For a brief retrospective of the recent Junior & Senior Family Weekend, plus news of a picnic under the pines in 1934, follow this link to read a post from the University Archives and Museum.
