Donations Needed for Nicaragua Silent Auction
Donations from faculty and staff have been the backbone of the success of the annual Silent Auction fundraiser for the Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion service program. All faculty, staff, students, and UP friends are welcome to participate in the Silent Auction, either as a donor of items or a bidder. This year’s auction will take place from Tuesday, December 3 through Friday, December 6, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons main entrance hallway.
Single items, gift baskets, tickets to events, signed books, weekends at vacation homes or timeshares, gift certificates to local restaurants, and UP merchandise are just some of the items that have been popular at the auction in the past. Donations can be brought to the Moreau Center any time during the workday from now through Monday, December 1. Please contact Theresa McCreary, campus ministry, at 7131 or mccreary@up.edu if you have any questions about the auction. Thank you for your support!
Artisans For Nicaragua Silent Auction
The Artisans for Nicaragua Silent Auction and Gift Basket Raffle is coming soon, according to Theresa McCreary, campus ministry. It will take place from Tuesday, December 3 through Friday, December 6, 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons hallway.
Donations are needed! Proceeds of the Silent Auction & Gift Basket Raffle benefit UP students who will be going on the Nicaragua Immersion in May 2014. The students are responsible for fundraising for this valuable learning experience, and the Silent Auction & Gift Basket Raffle is one of their largest fundraisers. Last year many departments on campus generously and imaginatively created fabulous gift baskets to be included in the silent auction. Individuals (crafters or shoppers) are encouraged to donate an item to be included in the gift basket to be raffled off to one lucky winner.
Donations can be dropped off in the Moreau Center in St. Mary’s Student Center. This is a great fundraiser for our entire community. We appreciate your participation. Please call or e-mail McCreary at 7131 or mccreary@up.edu if you have any questions.
East Africa Interns Needed
The Moreau Center for Service and Leadership, in partnership with the Pamplin School of Business and Shiley School of Engineering, is currently seeking applicants for the East Africa Initiative Internship. Applicants can come from any school within the University. This 10-week summer program in Kenya usually begins with an introduction to the work of the Congregation of Holy Cross, and the remainder of the internships is a collaboration with the Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD), which provides students the opportunity to be immersed in Kenyan culture and to work with grassroots organizations to develop sustainable solutions to important issues facing the community.
Preference is given to sophomore and junior applicants who will be returning to campus in fall semester of 2014, but all class years are welcome to apply. Applications are due Friday, November 22. For more information and the application, go to http://www.up.edu/moreaucenter/, or contact Dave Houglum, Moreau Center, at 8559 or houglum@up.edu.
Got Service?
All faculty and staff who have been part of a domestic or international service program (Americorps, JVC, Peace Corps, etc.) are invited to share their experiences with students who are interested in service after graduation at the Post-Graduate Service Dinner on Tuesday, November 12, at 6 p.m., in the Terrace Room. Contact Joe Burke at burke@up.edu or go to this link to sign up.
New Program Manager
New Moreau Center Director
David Houglum has been hired as interim director of the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership, effective September 30, according to Rev. John Donato, C.S.C., student affairs. Houglum has served as a leadership scholar and educator at Loyola Marymount as associate director of student leadership and development in the Ignatian Leadership Institute. Please welcome him to the campus community when he arrives to assume his new duties. For more information contact Donato at 8532 or donato@up.edu.
2013 Bike Commute Challenge
Every September, the Bicycle Transportation Alliance sponsors a Bike Commute Challenge for Portland area businesses and organizations, according to Pat Ell, Moreau Center. They challenge groups (schools, business, departments) to commute by bike for the month of September. Ell would like to challenge all other UP departments and offices to take part in this year’s Bike Commute Challenge. “Even though it may be impossible for any other offices to top the incredible stats put up by the Moreau Center,” says Ell, “I encourage you to challenge your coworkers to commute by bike – it is more healthy, more fun, and more environmentally sustainable than commuting by automobile.”
More information is available at http://tinyurl.com/ot8qv6c. When people log in, they will find a tool to log miles, which also estimates the CO2 that a bicyclist has not contributed to the atmosphere. For more information contact Ell at 7132 or ell@up.edu.
2013 Building Community: Serving To Learn
On Saturday, August 31, University of Portland first-year students will be uniquely immersed in the three hallmarks of our University: Teaching and Learning, Faith and Formation, and Service and Leadership. Faculty and staff members are asked to consider being a part of this endeavor by participating in the ninth annual Building Community: Serving to Learn program. Junior student Megan Lester is organizing this half day of community service and discussion for all first-year students, in coordination with the Shepard Freshman Resource Center and the Moreau Center for Service and Leadership.
As University community members, faculty and staff often go beyond the boundaries of classrooms and offices in their investment in the lives of students. This generosity is one of the unique advantages that students experience at the University of Portland. By giving time on August 31 to work alongside students and serve as a facilitator for a group of fifteen students after their experience faculty and staff will be fulfilling a vital part of the University’s mission. More information and a signup form can be found at http://tinyurl.com/cnhalnl. The day’s schedule is as follows:
- 8:15 am: Meet at the Tennis Center/Breakfast
- 8:45-9 a.m.: Send-off to designated sites • 12-1:15 p.m.: Return to campus, pick up lunch, discussion in small groups
- 1:15-1:45 p.m.: Closing ceremony.
