Student Flu Shot Clinic: Thursday, Nov. 12

October 30, 2020

The Health and Counseling Center and School of Nursing will be hosting a flu shot clinic for students on Thursday, November 12, from 11-2 p.m., at The Anchor (Haggerty Hall). Flu shots cost $20 or are free for students with coverage under Pacific Source student health insurance. Students can pay cash or charge the amount to their student accounts.

We encourage all students, as well as employees and other community members, to get their annual flu shot this year. Getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever during 2020-2021 to protect yourself and the people around you from flu, and to help reduce the strain on healthcare systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Students who are not able to attend this flu shot clinic, or who are located in their hometowns, can alternatively go to their local pharmacy or doctor’s office with their health insurance card to get an annual flu shot at no cost!

Fight the flu and protect your health and the health of our communities! Pilots Prevent.

Questions about the flu clinic or other services? Email HCC@up.edu or visit the HCC webpage.

Humanities Faculty: Apply For Kate Regan Faculty Development Fund Grants

October 30, 2020

The Collaborative for International Studies and Global Outreach (CISGO) is pleased to announce the continuation of the Kate Regan Faculty Development grants for 2021–2022. A generous donor has created a grant to support faculty in the humanities (English, History, International Languages and Cultures, Performing and Fine Arts, Philosophy, and Theology) whose teaching and scholarship encompasses international and intercultural topics. The donor desires that this grant will honor the late Kate Regan, who was a tireless advocate for junior faculty; therefore, applications from junior faculty will be given priority.

A total of $10,000 has been generously donated for this grant, which is designed for faculty members in the humanities to support an internationally focused research project that contributes to the internationalization of the University of Portland by incorporating international perspectives into teaching or curricular development. The selection committee will decide on awarding a single $10K grant, or smaller grants depending on the application pool.

The funding may be used for international travel for research, course development, or scholarly collaboration with colleagues in other countries beyond the USA and/or internationally focused professional development. They may also be used as a stipend to pay for research, course development, or scholarly collaboration with colleagues in other countries beyond the USA and/or internationally focused professional development. Please note: Any portion of the grant used as a stipend will be subject to deduction of taxes and fringe benefits.

For details regarding the selection criteria, timeline, and link to the application, visit the CISGO website at: Kate Regan Faculty Development Fund. We will hold an information session on Friday, November 13, at 11 a.m. via Zoom using this link. Please contact Laura McLary, CAS, for the passcode at mclary@up.edu. McLary and Eddie Contreras, assistant provost for international education, diversity, and inclusion, will be on hand to answer questions and describe the application process.

Questions? Email Lisa Reed, CISGO chair, at reedl@up.edu or Eddie Contreras at contera@up.edu.

A Moment of Beauty: Esther

October 30, 2020

This week’s 90 seconds of quiet beauty from The Saint John’s Bible takes us to Esther. Illuminator Donald Jackson strove to convey Esther’s dual identities as steadfast Jewish woman and queen of Babylon, as well as ongoing violence in the Middle East. There is also a nod to the work of Gustav Klimt. If these weekly glimpses into one of UP’s great treasures arouse questions, feel free to contact Karen Eifler, Garaventa Center, at eifler@up.edu.

UP Month of Remembrance

October 30, 2020

For many centuries, the Catholic Church has dedicated November as a month of prayer for the deceased. Since its founding in 1901, the University of Portland has observed this ancient custom. On behalf of the University and Holy Cross community on The Bluff, we invite faculty, staff, alumni, families and friends to join with us in prayer again this year for those who have gone before us.

Please click this button to share with us the names of your beloved departed and we will remember them in our Masses and prayers throughout November.

For more information contact Sarah Kuenzi, alumni and parent relations, at kuenzi@up.edu or x8696.
