Parents Night Out, Nov. 6

sally and andi copyUniversity parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, November 6, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/ preschool. The cost is $30 per child and $40 for families (two or more) and includes dinner for the kids. All UP faculty and staff members can take advantage of this service, not just those whose kids are enrolled in daycare. Proceeds benefit the UP daycare/ preschool house.

Spring Book Orders Due Nov. 6

bookshelfBarnes and Noble staff are asking that faculty submit their spring book orders prior to November 6. Orders can be placed via the web at this link, by e-mail at bright@up.edu, or by phone at x7125. Faculty are asked to submit their book order even if they are not using textbooks or if the class is a continuation of the fall semester.

2015 Advent Concert, Dec. 5

mikeconnolly copyThe Advent Concert is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, at 8 p.m., at St. Mary’s Cathedral. The Advent Concert is the highlight of the year for the University Singers, directed by Michael Connolly, and Women’s Chorale, directed by Kathryn Briggs. The featured composition is “A Ceremony of Carols” by Benjamin Britten, accompanied by UP faculty member Jenny Lindner on harp. Advent readings and Christmas carols will get everyone in the mood for the festive Christmas season. Tickets are free, but they are required to make sure everyone can be accommodated, since this event brings a full audience.

Pilot Basketball Season Starts This Weekend

1aPilots150The Pilot basketball season is officially here, as both the men’s and women’s basketball teams are set to play exhibition games this weekend. The women’s team starts the action with a Friday night game versus Warner Pacific at 6 p.m. Then the men’s team takes on Concordia-Irvine on Saturday at 2 p.m. These two exhibition games are free to faculty, staff, students, and the public and are also a great chance to see the team in action for the first time this year. Again the games are free, so invite the whole family and enjoy college basketball on the Bluff.

Last Two Home Games for Pilot Soccer

soccer ballThe Pilot soccer season ends this weekend with two home games at Merlo Field. The women’s soccer team plays first with a Saturday night game versus San Francisco that is set to start at 7 p.m. Then the men’s soccer team takes the field on Sunday afternoon for a 1 p.m. kickoff versus Pacific. Both of these games will feature a special pre-game ceremony to honor the senior soccer players. Tickets for the games are still available for purchase at the Pilots box office or by calling ext. 7525.

Bike Maintenance Class Series

1bikes150Recreational services offers a series of three Bike Maintenance Program sessions to help UP community members keep their bikes running smoothly. Sign up for individual sessions or for the full program. This is a free service limited to 10 participants per session. Please sign up at the Outdoor Pursuits Program office in the Beauchamp Center.

  • Bike Maintenance Class: Wednesday November 4, noon-12:45 p.m.; Saturday, November 7, 11 a.m.-11:45 a.m. Learn the basics to keep your bike in good running condition, and avoid breakdowns. In this class you will learn how to fix a flat tire, learn the basic operations of a bike and how to keep them clean and running smoothly.
  • Bike Tuning Class: Wednesday, November 11, noon-12: 45 p.m. Learn basic adjustment techniques brakes, saddles, and handle bars. We will take a better look at the function of the bike components and learn how to properly adjust them to ensure smooth shifting, effective breaking, and a comfortable ride.
  • Derailleur Tuning Class: Wednesday, November 18, noon-12:45 p.m., or Saturday, November 21, 11-11:45 a.m. Learn how to make your bike shift smoothly to avoid any damage to the drive train and surrounding components. A well-tuned bike will ensure there is no loss in energy during a faulty shift.

Anita Gooding, social work, was selected as a 2020-2021 Field Research Scholar by the Transforming Field Education Landscape (TFEL) program at the University of Calgary in Alberta, Canada. Scholars attend regular seminars and present their own research related to strengthening field education in social work.

Bob Butler, professor emeritus of environmental studies; Jenda Johnson, Earth Sciences Animated; and Nic Zentner, Central Washington University, published an animation titled “Ghost Forests: Evidence for a Giant Earthquake & Tsunami in the Pacific Northwest.” This animation explores how Native American oral history, geology of ghost forests in coastal Washington and Oregon, and written accounts of a tsunami that flooded Japanese Pacific Coast villages converge to document the most recent Cascadia subduction zone megathrust earthquake on January 26, 1700 at about 9 p.m. The Ghost Forest animation can be found on the IRIS website at: https://www.iris.edu/hq/inclass/animation/740 or on YouTube at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xPbt8iiDRo&feature=youtu.be.
