Migration and Integration: European and American Perspectives

October 27, 2017

The German Studies program invites students, faculty, and staff to a panel discussion on migration and integration from both European and American perspectives on Monday, November 6, at 7:30 p.m., in Shiley Hall room 124. Holger Mahnicke, head of the Department for Communication and Culture at the German Embassy, will give a short presentation on Germany’s response to the 2015 Syrian refugee crisis and will join a panel of UP students in a discussion on migration and integration from multiple perspectives. Light refreshments will be served. A detailed flyer is available at this link.

Memorial Service Honoring Departed Colleagues, Nov. 2

October 27, 2017

Following a resolution of the Academic Senate, November 2, All Souls Day, will include a service honoring all faculty and staff who have died in the current and past years. The service will begin at 4 p.m. at the Faculty and Staff Memorial (rain location: Chapel of Christ the Teacher). Following brief readings and common prayer, a wreath will be laid at the memorial, a sign of remembering those who have passed. A reception will follow in the Bauccio Commons Board Room.

Need a Parents Night Out? Friday, Nov. 3 Is Your Chance

University parents are invited to take the opportunity to enjoy four hours of free time with their significant others while the UP onsite daycare watches their children on Parents Night Out, Friday, November 3, from 6-10 p.m. This service is provided by Vermont Hills Family Life Center daycare/preschool. The cost is $40 for one child or $50 for two kids or more, and includes dinner for the little ones.

Parents Night Out takes place during the academic year on the first Friday of each month, and is not limited to children already enrolled in UP daycare. For more information or to sign your kids up, contact Desiree Moan, director, at (503) 283-9688 or desireem@vhflc.com.

TLC From The TLC: Hover Much?

This week’s offering from the Teaching and Learning Collaborative is actually a question that super hardworking professors committed to their students’ learning and success might ask themselves as they address the 87th email asking “what exactly are you looking for in this assignment?” or “what can I do to make up the points I missed when I overslept and missed the quiz last week?” Is there such a thing as a “Helicopter Professor?”  Spoiler alert if you don’t have time to read the whole precis: Yes, actually, there probably is. Author Kristie McAllum offers some warning signs, explains why failure should not be avoided at all costs, and provides some tips for hovering a little bit further away in the article cited in this Teaching Tip of the Week.

Honors Program Mentors Needed

Faculty members are invited to serve as Honors Program mentors. Faculty mentors assist with selecting the incoming honors class, are assigned two incoming honors student mentees, and are encouraged to meet with them on a regular basis during the students’ first two years at the University.

Donations Needed for Nicaragua Silent Auction, Nov. 27-Dec. 1

Donations from faculty and staff have been the backbone of the success of the annual silent auction fundraiser for the Moreau Center’s Nicaragua Immersion service program. All faculty, staff, students, and UP friends are welcome to participate in the silent auction, either as a donor of items or a bidder.

This year’s auction will take place from Monday, November 27 to Friday, December 1, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Bauccio Commons main entrance hallway. Single items, gift baskets, tickets to events, signed books, weekends at vacation homes or timeshares, gift certificates to local restaurants, and UP merchandise are just some of the items that have been popular at the auction in the past. Donations can be brought to the Moreau Center any time during the workday from now through Wednesday, November 22.

Summer Research Poster Session: November 1

Students from across campus will be presenting posters documenting the research they completed both at UP and at other institutions across the nation this summer. Students will be sharing their results from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, November 1, in both the Franz Hall Lobby and Franz Hall 120.

Attention, Boys & Ghouls: HALLoween on Oct. 31

Faculty, staff, and neighborhood families are invited to participate in the annual HALLoween trick-or-treating night in selected UP dorms on Tuesday, October 31, from 5 to 7 p.m. Children through sixth grade can trick-or-treat, a great way to celebrate Halloween in a safe and controlled environment. All children wishing to participate in HALLoween must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. There will be one check-in location at the Chiles Center and parking in the main lot. Everyone must check in at this location to gain admittance to the residence halls. HALLoween is sponsored by the Campus Program Board and Office of Residence Life. Dave Houglum, Franz Center for Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Innovation, completed a six-year commitment on the Board of Directors for the Maybelle Center for Community, with two of those years serving as the Executive Board Secretary. Founded by Fr. Richard Berg, C.S.C. (former Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at University of Portland from 1978-1991), the Maybelle Center disrupts social isolation so we can all experience a healthy, connected life and contribute to a thriving Portland.
